Before 1984, the renowned athletic sneakers brand Nike did not have much of a hold in the basketball world. After the advent of the Michael Jordan era, however, the company started to align itself with several renowned players who could market their products on another level. One of these players was current Dallas Mavericks star Kyrie Irving, who was provided with his shoe line. However, after eight years of a fruitful relationship, Nike decided to cut ties with Irving in 2022 in light of his alleged Anti-Semitic remarks. Two years later, the player will debut his partnership with a new brand.
In September 2023, Kyrie Irving announced that he had signed a five-year collaboration agreement with the Chinese Sneakers Brand ‘Anta Sports’. Along with being named the company’s Chief Creative Officer, a new sneakers line bearing his name was also promised to be launched soon. In March of this year, NBA fans from around the world got a glimpse of the Anta Kai 1. Bearing a purple and pink colorway that was named the “Artist on the Court”, the sneaker was designed by reportedly taking the player’s ‘Native American Roots’ into consideration and placing designs that “encodes a part of Kyrie’s journey”. The tongue of the shoe carried Irving’s custom signature logo in gold. In contrast, certain corners of the product carried Egyptian hieroglyphs, which the player had previously used on his other signature shoes.

Along with the breathtaking design, the Anta Kai 1 also possessed features that would make it a worthwhile wear for the Dallas Mavericks shooting guard or any basketball athlete. According to reports, the midsole was built using nitrogen foam, which would allow a greater level of stability. targeted for stability at the heel. Along with that, a carbon fiber plate covered the midfoot. The shoe also possesses a strap that goes over the laces at midfoot for additional security from unexpected circumstances.
Since their release in March, not much information is known about how the sneakers have fared in terms of sales. However, the official website of Sneaker News has gone on to call the Anta Kai 1 a “monumental hit”, since it has “struck a note with fans of KAI”. The site ended its review by calling the product “one of 2024’s best new basketball shoes on the market”.
The decision to evolve convinced Kyrie Irving to go with Anta instead of Nike
Almost a year after he partnered up with Anta Sports, Kyrie Irving seems to have adjusted well into his role with the sneakers brand. Along with his signature line, which is set to announce new colorways in the next few weeks, being more involved with the brand as its Chief Creative Officer has already convinced the shooting guard that he is much better off here than he was with Nike.
During an interview back in May, the player revealed that he chose to go forward with Anta since it offered him “a different role than most of my peers or what I’m used to going into a signature deal”. Furthermore, his role as Creative Officer would reportedly allow him to understand the global market in China and its needs. Along with the flexibility, the brand also gave the player the freedom to choose who he would like to partner up with in the future.
“The thing I’m looking forward to most is being able to bring more people onto the Anta team, the Anta roster, and assign more players,” said Irving. “That was what I was looking forward to doing because when I was at my previous brand, that’s what I wanted to evolve to”.
After recently signing his father with the brand, Kyrie Irving has shown that his journey with Anta is going well. It remains to be seen just where the same will go.
