Another game, another Anthony Edwards technical foul. This is Ant’s 18th of the season. We know he’s a troublemaker, but even as the season ends, he hasn’t been able to keep himself out of trouble. Even though he and the official who gave him the tech are on good terms. But could that mean Ant will receive the same leniency recently given to another star in the NBA?

So what happened tonight? Well, the Minnesota Timberwolves beat the Nets pretty soundly in what was a quiet game for Ant, scoring-wise. In the second quarter, Edwards was getting up close and personal with the Nets’ Keon Johnson on the wing. The ref thought there was too much contact and called for a personal foul on Edwards. But in protest, Edwards spread out his arms in disbelief and protested the call, using profanity. In fact, here’s what the man himself said about the whole thing.

“They called a foul, and I said, ‘what was the effing foul?’ And he gave me a tech. I hope they look at it and rescind it so I can play in a couple of days.” And when a reporter asked whether the league would rescind it, Ant revealed why he thought they would. “Yeah. I’m praying that you’re saying that. I mean, because I don’t feel like it should have been a tech, but me and Ray [Acosta] got a good relationship. You know? So we talked it out after the fact, but I still don’t feel like I deserve to tech for just that little,” revealed Edwards.

Now, this tech means Ant will be suspended for the Timberwolves’ next and final regular-season game against the Utah Jazz. There will also be an accompanying fine that Edwards will need to pay. But we know that’s something he’s used to doing.

Nonetheless, there is a chance that Anthony Edwards appeals this technical foul, given what happened recently with the Los Angeles Lakers’ Luka Doncic.

Is Anthony Edwards' fiery passion a strength or a liability for the Timberwolves' future success?

Could Anthony Edwards have his technical rescinded like Luka Doncic?

The Lakers faced off against the Oklahoma City Thunder for the second time last week. And Luka Doncic was ejected from the game after receiving his second technical foul. His crime? Talking back to a fan. Well, that’s what he WAS doing. But referee JT Orr believed Luka’s words to be directed at him. Hence, the technical.

In the Pool report for the game, crew chief Tony Brothers revealed that Luka received his second technical for looking “directly at an official” and using “vulgar language“. But this caused a massive uproar. Both Doncic and the fan he “abused” claimed that their interaction had nothing to do with the referees. In light of these facts, the NBA officially rescinded the second technical call on Luka.

Now, could we see the same happen to Anthony Edwards? Well, here’s where it gets a little dicey. In the Pool Report for tonight’s game, conducted by the Athletic’s Jon Krawczynski, crew chief Bill Kennedy revealed why Ant received a technical tonight. “Anthony Edwards was assessed a technical foul for use of profanity directed toward an official,” said Kennedy. And when Jon asked him to confirm, Kennedy reiterated his stance.

So, even though Ant has a “good relationship” with Ray Acosta, the official who called the tech, it doesn’t mean he will be receiving the same privilege as Luka. Firstly, Ant himself admitted to using profanity towards the official. And per the rules, that’s a no-go regardless of your relationship with said official. Second, what happened in the Lakers-Thunder game was a misunderstanding on the official’s part. And that does not seem to be the case here.

So, at the end of the day, the answer is likely no. Anthony Edwards will most probably not have this technical rescinded like Luka Doncic’s one was. And his tech and the ensuing suspension will also stand. Whether the T-Wolves and Ant decide to appeal regardless of the outcome is up to them, though. And good luck to them if they do!
