The momentum had been built, but the Minnesota Timberwolves broke down at home. It was all about the Dallas Mavericks today. Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving became maniac scorers, punishing the tenacious Wolves defense for 72 points. Anthony Edwards took a valiant stride along with Karl-Anthony Towns, but the blood just kept flowing. Dallas was the superior side, keeping their undefeated record at Minnesota. After the game, a demoralized and low-energy Anthony Edwards addressed the loss.

Speaking about the preparations for next season and bringing his teammates together, the 22-year-old wasn’t keen on holding workouts in the summer. He trusts the work of his teammates and has begun thinking about the next season. “I mean, yeah, they got their own trainers, their own guys. Yeah, they just work on their game,”  said Edwards. While they might not work together, the message has been clearly conveyed, as he added, “I just told them, y’all know that we’re going to be right back in the same position next year. So y’all know how you need to train to get ready and include myself”.

For all the Michael Jordan comparisons, Edwards is truly a different kind of leader. He shows faith in his teammates to do the work and unite using their shared goals of a championship. Jordan wanted to witness these preparations. His standards and work ethic were unmatched. His Airness wanted his teammates to follow his strict regime and naturally, he built trust in those who didn’t fold under his intimidation. Jordan didn’t see benefits in being easy on his teammates. There was a palpable fear of him, even when it was just practice.

However, much like MJ, Anthony Edwards has experienced an early setback. The Timberwolves didn’t expect to make it this far prior to the season. But the fact that they did and came so close will agonize Edwards. His cunning mentality is only going to grow more fierce and he is going to return with burning motivation next season.

Michael Jordan and Anthony Edwards have different approaches

In the history of the NBA, probably no one will ever duplicate the mentality of Michael Jordan. The six-time champion had a short fuse, but it wasn’t created to aggression. Jordan needed little to nothing to charge himself for a battle. Once he had something or someone to prove wrong, it was game over. It was all made possible with his tremendous work ethic.

Jordan was always consistent when preparing. Every day of practice had the intensity of a Game 7. Michael Jordan was relentless in his drive to improve himself. As a freshman at North Carolina, he vowed to be the best player in the gym. Once he heard it took sheer effort, the five-time MVP immersed himself in basketball completely. “I’m going to show you. Nobody will ever work as hard as I work,” this is what MJ told one of his coaches at North Carolina. He honored this promise till the end of his NBA career.

Comparing Anthony Edwards to the legend after only four seasons; he does have the elite mentality that runs through the veins of such ‘killers’. Edwards is an amazing talent; the Wolves’ cornerstone is still brewing his game. Maybe later, the comparisons will make sense. As of now, even Jordan sees something special about Edwards, as Stephen A. Smith admitted on First Take. So, at the moment, it’s about building the Timberwolves into a championship team and growing with them.
