Adidas betting big on Anthony Edwards—Is he the future face of basketball?

While Team USA won their fifth straight gold medal at the Olympics on Saturday, Anthony Edwards also got his first taste of international victory. It was only a year ago that he failed to lead the Americans to the gold medal in the FIBA World Cup. Moreover, he couldn’t bring any hardware back with him because Team USA suffered a huge upset in the bronze medal match against Canada. So, finally getting redemption in Paris, Ant-Man broke the silence just hours after winning his first Olympic gold as Adidas celebrated his accomplishment with an amazing tribute.

Showing off his gold medal to the world, Edwards posted an image of himself with the iconic biting the medal pose on IG and wrote, “Aint nun new”. Adding to the aura, he was even wearing a Team USA t-shirt with all the players’ caricatures printed on it.

Sure enough, Adidas was quick to celebrate Edwards’ win, as he was the only superstar on Team USA who was signed with the three-stripe brand. Dropping a brand new commercial dedicated to Ant’s victory, Adidas revamped the well-known ‘He’s got the whole world in his hands’ song and made a personalized version of it for the Wolves star. “From Atlanta to the World. @theanthonyedwards_ is just getting started. Believe That.” The sneaker giants wrote.

Turning 23 just a few days ago, the youngster could very well be the next face of the league. He has proven his mettle in the last couple of months as he first led the Wolves to the West Finals in the NBA and has now become an Olympic champion. Recognizing his potential, Adidas even signed Ant-Man to a multi-year contract extension last month, which is reported to pay him eight figures annually. Although Edwards was the only Adidas-represented player on the squad, he made his presence known to the world.

How did Anthony Edwards perform in the Paris Olympics?

While he proclaimed himself as the number 1 option before the tournament began, Edwards could not outshine the experienced veterans on his team. But he did make a huge impact whenever his number was called. Coming off the bench, Edwards had his best performance in the group stage game against Puerto Rico where he went off for 26 points to blow out the opposition. Even in the knockout game against Brazil, he led the second unit and was the second-highest scorer on his team with 17 points.

During Saturday’s final against France, Edwards got very limited playing time as Steve Kerr put him on the court for just 9 minutes. But boy were those nine minutes just a treat to watch for the fans! Despite the reduced minutes, Edwards ended up scoring 8 points, which also included one fiery alley-oop dunk in the third quarter that helped Team USA extend their lead. Surely, once KD, Steph, and LeBron take a backseat, you can expect Anthony Edwards to be the new face and leader of Team USA by the time the 2028 Olympics arrive in LA.
