It was a tough Saturday night for the LA Lakers and LeBron James. They were involved in a heated affair with their historic rivals, the Boston Celtics at the TD Garden. Their problems started with Boston’s star Jayson Tatum dropping a 40-point performance. He ensured the Celtics grabbed a 111-101 win over the Lakers. However, while this defeat was agonizing for Los Angeles, it became an afterthought after LeBron James exited the game due to some discomfort.
Minutes before the game’s end, James left the court after contesting a layup against Jaylen Brown. When James walked off, it was evident something was amiss with the Lakers veteran. Despite the ongoing game, all eyes were on James. LeBron finished the night with 22 points, 14 rebounds, and nine assists before leaving the game early. As the game finished, everyone, including the media and fans alike, was intrigued to know about LeBron’s exit. Firstly, he revealed that it was the play against Brown when he felt that he had picked up an injury and decided to call it quits for the night.
He then was asked about his initial thoughts as soon as he knew about the injury. “The first thing that popped into my mind was Christmas Day, my first year with the Lakers is the first thing that popped in my mind.” He added. The Lakers No. 23 was talking about the 2018-19 season when he suffered a groin injury. LA was up against Golden State on Christmas day when James had this unfortunate incident.

Following this, he had to miss a hefty 17 games and the injury’s effects bothered him for the remainder of the season. He’ll be praying that’s not the case this time, especially during such a crucial time of the season.

Interestingly, as LeBron went down, he immediately thought of Anthony Davis, who has also been dealing with a groin injury. The connection may seem unusual, but it highlights how injuries can weigh heavily on players, especially as the season progresses. “I thought about AD it’s crazy, but I thought about AD.” The Lakers veteran recalls. It’s not what anyone thought would be on James’ mind, as he surprised everyone. However, it might be related to the fact that his close friend is suffering from a groin injury as well. Davis suffered the injury just three quarters into his Mavericks debut, which could explain why LeBron thought of him. James initially downplayed the injury, but a new update suggests otherwise.
LeBron James could miss multiple weeks of action due to his groin injury
Lakers have been hard-hit with injuries, with the likes of Jaxson Hayes and Rui Hachimura struggling with their fitness. Now, to add to Los Angeles’ injury struggles, LeBron James has joined the list. After suffering an unfortunate groin injury in their loss against the Celtics, earlier expectations suggested James would miss only a few days. However, ESPN’s Dave McMenamin has now revealed that it will be a matter of weeks, and not just a few days.

It is too early to project an accurate timetable for how long LeBron James could miss because of his left groin injury, sources told ESPN. However one source said the initial thought is that it will sideline James for a matter of weeks, not a matter of days.

This is huge! Given how important the 40-year-old is for LA. James has been nothing short of impressive so far in this campaign. He is averaging 25 points while shooting an impressive 51.7 percent from the field. While any kind of injury to King James is worrisome for the Lakers, a groin injury could prove disastrous. There are just about six weeks of the regular season left, if James misses even a week or two, it might just make things much more difficult for LA. For a rough idea, the Lakers are 9-6 without LeBron in the past two seasons.
Keeping this in mind, and their upcoming matchups including clashes against Denver and Milwaukee, they are in a precarious position. The Lakers must stay afloat until James returns, hoping his absence is brief. Hopefully, we’ll have a much clearer image of the damage done, as the Lakers could provide an exact timeline for the forward’s return. Until then, Los Angeles will have to focus on the task at hand and get back to winning ways.
