If there was a skeleton dancing in the inferno, Dallas Mavericks would be its name. Last season’s finalists are literally down to their bare bones since last month with one after another injury. The situation was even severe for a potential forfeit. The 2-8 record in the last 10 games was detrimental enough to push the Mavs into the play-in dogfight. There’s still hope, only if Anthony Davis makes his return to scrap them over the line before the post-season. The forward has been out since February 8 and now some positive updates are emerging. But when exactly will Anthony Davis return?
The franchise was optimistic when they brought AD on board, believing his brilliance could help compensate for Luka Doncic’s absence. Unfortunately, that plan didn’t work out. Davis ended up on the injury report on the very day of his debut against the Rockets. And the 32-year-old was ruled out due to an adductor strain in his left foot, with no specific return date set. But now, there appears to be a glimmer of hope.
According to Marc Stein’s report, Davis is close to rejoining the squad during their upcoming road trip this week. So, the Mavericks will be on a four-game road trip starting Monday, and there is a chance Davis could return. The insider had also stated before the game against the Pistons, “The Mavericks’ Anthony Davis, I’m told, is scheduled to participate today in his second round of 5-on-5 practice with the @TexasLegends of the @nbagleague as he continues to progress toward his return from a left adductor strain.”

UPDATE: Davis’ practice session has everyone thinking that his return might be just on the horizon. You couldn’t be more right! Stein’s latest report states, “Tuesday at Knicks or Thursday at Orlando have emerged as targets for Anthony Davis’ return to the Mavericks’ lineup, @TheSteinLine has learned. Out since Feb. 8, Davis is officially listed as doubtful Monday at Brooklyn but is in contention now to play at Madison Square Garden.“

But is it really good news for the Mavericks, or just a rushed decision?

Is Anthony Davis’ return a sign of the Mavericks’ hasty decision?
After Kyrie Irving’s season-ending ACL injury, there were suggestions for Davis not to return. After all, the team has nothing left this season to push for a postseason run. The Mavericks’ responsibilities now heavily rely on Klay Thompson, but that alone isn’t enough to secure their position. But, there’s still hope, as the Suns and Kings have also faltered. If they don’t win, they could fall behind, leaving room for the Mavericks to climb up, provided they win their upcoming games. With Anthony Davis on the roster, that possibility doesn’t seem far-fetched.

The team is currently in the eleventh spot in the West, with slim hopes of clinching the tenth spot for the play-ins. Their injury list is almost lengthier than their active lineup. And on top of that, some serious concerns are mounting for the front office. With all factors at play, including the frequent calls for his dismissal from Dallas Nation, GM Nico Harrison has little choice but to find a swift solution.
While the franchise’s decision is understandable, it also carries a major risk. If Anthony Davis is rushed back before he’s fully fit, it could lead to a more serious injury, turning their championship aspirations into a distant dream.
