‘Don’t celebrate before you win’ – it’s one thing to not grasp the concept of it, but it’s a whole different thing to celebrate amid a loss, especially a personal achievement while the team suffers. As crazy as this may sound, something similar happened for the Portland Trail Blazers, as revealed by coach Chauncey Billups on Carmelo Anthony’s 7 PM in Brooklyn podcast. While he did not name the player in question, Bleacher Report’s Chris Haynes tried digging deeper into the incident in a recent interview with Anfernee Simons.
But what exactly did this yet unknown player do that Haynes got so interested in the story? As revealed by Billups, the player in question shared a highlight of his nasty dunk during halftime, while his team was down by 18 points. Considering how competitive NBA stars are, celebrating a personal achievement while your team is losing is almost a crime. Although Simons denied revealing the player’s name, he let Bleacher Report’s NBA insider in on some interesting details.
The 25-year-old recalled being there when the whole incident transpired. “It was crazy. Everybody locker room like, ‘Did he just do that?’ People showing on his profile? I’m like, ‘No way he did that. No way'” Simons told Haynes. He further mentioned that the situation was rectified quickly, as there were multiple vets on the team who addressed it immediately. Even Billups, on Anthony’s podcast, recollected getting the highlight taken down by this player.

“Man, you know I grinded his a** up, man… I said, ‘Ay yo bro. Get the f*ck back there and take that s*ht off your joint, man. What the f*ck is wrong with you man,” the Blazers coach recalled. But after the recent discussion, how do we know it was not Anfernee Simons himself who did this? Well, Hynes expressed a hint of similar suspicion at the start of the interview. But the 25-year-old stated it was not him. “I don’t even like posting. I don’t even like posting highlights after the game, after we lose. So, I just never feel right doing that type of stuff either…,” he said.

Now, as embarrassing as this may seem, it’s not half as bad as what some other players used to indulge in during halftime.
“I’d just walk to the liquor store and get it”: The time a former Bulls star admitted to consuming alcohol during halftimes
What’s your perspective on:
Is Anfernee Simons protecting Coach Billups, or is there more to the Blazers' locker room story?
Have an interesting take?
Metta World Peace (Ron Artest earlier) has had some fair share of his controversial moments in the NBA. While ‘Malice in the Palace’ has been the most popular one of these, not many would know the NBA champ used to drink in the half-time for his first three seasons with the Bulls.
“I used to drink Hennessy … at halftime… [kept it] in my locker. I’d just walk to the liquor store and get it,” Artest once told the Sporting News. And this has not been one of a kind revelation or incident in the NBA. In fact, this and smoking up were quite a prevalent practice in the league during the 90s, as revealed by Rasheed Wallace as well.
On his podcast, Wallace stated he was quite surprised as a young player in the league. And thus kept an eye on what other players were doing in the half-time. “They would be out for a one-hitter… I was the one telling them the coach was looking for them; I was the lookout…” he recalled.

Celebrating a dunk during half-time amid the face of defeat does not sound as bad now, does it? While the player could have been more empathetic towards his team’s loss, the magnitude at which Blazers have lost in the past few seasons, the player would have hardly got any chance to celebrate.
