Canadian forward Andrew Wiggins was one of the trades involved in the Jimmy Butler to Warriors deal- and if anything, it’s a bit confusing. Of course, the rules state that there has to be an equal exchange according to both teams, but why Wiggins? Now playing for the Miami Heat, the 29-year-old has been instrumental for the Warriors, even during their tough times this season that’s left them languishing 10th in the table.

Endearingly dubbed ‘Maple Jordan’, he made his debut for the Florida side in their 85-103 loss to the Celtics, putting up an impressive 11 points and 5 rebounds and assists. He was an important asset for the Bay Area Warriors, averaging 17.1 PPG in his nearly 6-year tenure with them and even winning an NBA championship in 2022. With importance comes a hefty compensation- one that is reflected in his contract with the Miami Heat.

Wiggins signed a 4-year, $109,000,002 veteran contract with the Golden State Warriors in 2023. This was a huge number compared to the rest of the players’ contracts, making him the 60th-best earner in the league this year. His current contract with the Heat sees him bagging $26,276,786, which is 18.69% of the team’s total cap. This is an 8% increase on his first year in the new contract, where he was earning $24,330,357.

The 2015 Rookie of the Year will earn a guaranteed salary of $28,223,215 in the 2025-26 season. This deal is ideal for the Miami reps, as it increases his salary by 6.8% which showcases his importance in the team, while also bringing the total cap down to 18.25%. And in the Heat’s hunt for playoffs, they can certainly look to use the rest of the cap to strengthen the rest of the hardwood.

His contract in the 2026-27 season is looking a little different though. According to Spotrac, that year will be a player option, the deadline for which is 29th June 2026. The confirmation of the extension will see him earning $30,169,644 constituting 17.74% of the total team’s cap, bringing his total earnings to $92,690,273.

Have an interesting take?

Wiggins had been with German sporting giants Adidas since his collegiate days, where he played for the Kansas Jayhawks. While specific numbers of the deal weren’t available due to the existence of a strict confidentiality provision, his former agent Bill Duffy said that it’s “safe to say it’s the greatest rookie contract adidas has ever done in basketball,” The deal did include a clause which allowed Wiggins to opt out of the arrangement and revisit the market throughout the contract’s life. Upon a disagreement with the Three Stripes on making a custom sneaker for him, he exited the Adidas family, opting to sign with Chinese shoemakers Peak.

His other endorsements include companies like FitBit and BioSteel, bringing his earnings through endorsements to $600k. Not just these, but he joined a team that included Kelly Olynyk, Alex Caruso, and even Klay Thompson to invest in the online residential real estate marketplace ‘Sundae’. The Series C funding was estimated to be worth $80 million,

Safe to say that Wiggins’ talent and output match his earnings in the NBA. Him being the 60th-best player in the NBA fully suits his contributions to the Association, and the only way is up for the Canadian.
