Is the Warriors' decision to extend Moody over Kuminga a sign of shifting team priorities?

“I would love it if both guys signed extensions, but I also understand they have to weigh the pros and cons.” Steve Kerr knew that re-signing both Jonathan Kuminga and Moses Moody was not a certainty. Well, that’s exactly how things transpired. While the Warriors secured Moody yesterday by inking a three-year $39 million rookie extension, they were unable to reach an agreement with their other young star. But despite JK’s uncertain future, Steph Curry seems to have a positive outlook, as the hooper focused on what the franchise was able to accomplish rather than what they couldn’t.

In his latest Instagram story, Steph shared the team’s post, highlighting Moody’s latest extension. And the veteran superstar raised a toast to the young guard for bagging a lucrative deal and solidifying his future in the Bay Area, “Congrats Mo!!!” with the flying money emoji. Well, the Baby-Faced Assassin has seen immense potential in Moses since his rookie season. Just two years ago, Steph Curry said this about the youngster, “He’s just an extremely talented, high IQ young guy that works tirelessly to be ready.”

So, it is not surprising that Curry is happy about Moody finally getting the money that he deserves. However, the Kuminga problem is yet to be solved. As per veteran analyst Anthony Slater, the Warriors and JK “were never all that close in negotiations.”

While the youngster was reportedly seeking a five-year $224 million max extension, the organization was unwilling to offer him the desired deal. And frankly, you cannot blame either of them. From Jonathan Kuminga’s perspective, he has shown tremendous growth each season and even had a breakout year by averaging 16.1 points and nearly 5 rebounds last season.

So, he has a shot at bagging a more lucrative deal later if he continues this upward trajectory. Meanwhile, the Warriors might not be willing to invest so much money in him until he proves himself on the big stage or shows that he can lead them to a championship. Sure enough, this gap has led to their disagreement. But Steph Curry’s excitement is justified considering the Warriors secured at least one young star to build their future around.

Steve Kerr sees Moses Moody playing a “big role” this season alongside Steph Curry and Co.

Obviously, Moody’s extension gives the Warriors some comfort about the team’s future. In his three seasons with the team, he has shown constant improvement in his game. Last season was his best one as he averaged 8.1 points and three rebounds. Moreover, he is a decent three-point shooter with a career efficiency of 36.2%, which is exactly what the team needs after Klay Thompson’s departure.

As expected, Steve Kerr also sees a bright future for the shooting guard, “He’s playing great. He’s gotten so much better in so many ways. We’ve always loved his character, his work ethic. This is the most confidence I think he’s played with and he’s going to play a big role for us.” Moody performed well in the preseason, where he had multiple double-digit scoring performances in 5-6 games and was highly efficient from beyond the arc.

If he can carry this momentum to the regular season, then the $39 million deal will end up being a huge bargain for a younger star like him. What are your thoughts?
