Philadelphia 76ers’ off-season was messy. With James Harden demanding to trade, many wondered who will fill his spot. Tyrese Maxey was that savior. He quickly took over as the lead scorer along with Joel Embiid. In the eleven games that the Sixers have played, Tyrese came through, even posting his career-high 50 points with seven rebounds and five assists.
The point guard has been showing a steady growth since joining with the Sixers who selected him as the 21st overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft. He signed a rookie scale contract which now brings him $13 million. After an excellent season last year, many hoped that Tyrese Maxey will be resigned on a rookie scale extension in the offseason. But that did not happen. However, now the 23-year looks at signing an even bigger deal as he heads into free agency next summer.

The biggest reason behind Daryl Morey not extending Maxey’s contract is so they can use his small salary cap to maximize their cap space next summer. This would be a risk for Tyrese to play out his rookie scale deal. But his excellent performances will definitely assure him of a great deal. Even if he is not resigned, he can easily sign with another team as a free agent.
If Tyrese Maxey continues his impressive performance, he is looking at a potential five-year rookie scale extension worth 25% of the cap. This translates to a rough $205 million spread over the years. It would be possible as their cap hold now is low and next year, there would be a 10% increase. Tyrese has played three seasons with the Sixers already and they have all the rights to him. This allows them to go even over the salary cap if need be to be able to resign him.

In 2015, the San Antonio Spurs asked their then-forward Kawhi Leonard to wait on his extension. The team wanted to use his low cap hold to sign LaMarcus Aldridge and maximize their cap space. As mentioned before, this move could potentially be risky for the player. But at the same time, it also shows the complete trust that the player has in his team to resign him.
It went right for Kawhi and the Spurs. Now it looks like it also could work out okay for the Sixers and Tyrese Maxey, since they would be on the same page.
