Steph Curry's warning to Serbia—Is this the confidence boost Team USA needs to dominate the Olympics?

We’re just moments away from the biggest game for Team USA so far in Paris. With Serbia guarding the door to the final, Steph Curry and Co. are fully aware of just what to expect in the game. It was about keeping the focus as Team USA sharpened their bodies and minds for the showdown in Bercy Arena.

On a personal note, it has been a forgettable tournament for Steph Curry, but that didn’t stop him from firing a warning shot at their European counterpart. In a recently posted video by USA Basketball, Steph Curry unleashed his veteran experience. Despite being a rookie on the Olympic stage, the 36-year-old knew exactly what the situation demands.

“He remains the same. We know who they are. They know who we are… Just be disciplined defensively, utilize our energy, utilize our depth. Just enjoy the moment. You just gotta be. That’s what it’s all about here,” Curry said during the pre-game practice on Wednesday about Thursday’s opponents.

While his words have the conviction expected of Steph Curry, his performance has left a lot to desire. In the 4 games so far, Curry has only managed to score 29 points. Even his 3-point shooting has deserted him. His 5-20 from downtown seems like something out of a horror movie after years of romcom experience.

The situation has been far from ideal from the Dubs maestro as well. “I know teams are going to be locked in on tracking me. So that puts a little more pressure on the shots you get. I kind of forced a couple [vs. South Sudan]. You go from shooting 20-something a game to maybe 6-to-10, so you have to be ready for them,” Curry previously said about his recent slump. Despite all this, Steve Kerr‘s faith remained unwavering in his soldier from many battles.

Have an interesting take?

After the string of unimpressive games, predictions flew in from all directions about when Kerr’s patience with Curry would run out. But it seems like, there’s still a lot of stoicism left in the Team USA HC. While he is not waiting for Curry to have one of those blinding games where he goes on an unmissable streak, he is not ready to throw him under the bus either. “We know what wins a FIBA game — it’s defense,” Kerr said in a recent interview. “We are just completely focused on our defense and part of defense is finishing the play with rebounds. The beauty of our team and the depth of our talent is that from one game to the next, we’ve got lots of guys who have the ability to get rolling (on offense).”

While this is Curry’s first Olympics, it’s hardly a first experience under FIBA rule for him. Curry has represented Team USA on 17 different occasions in the FIBA World Championship in 2010 and 2014. His shooting was also on par with his regular brilliance, as Curry was shooting 41.8% from the 3-point arc. How will Steph get back to that form again? Probably the game against Serbia will have a definitive answer to that.
