Apart from having a legendary career in the NBA, James has also experienced incredible success as a businessman. However, he has always ensured to give back to the community. In this effort, James started the ‘I Promise” school in his hometown of Akron, Ohio in 2018. The school specifically aims at-risk students, providing classes for students between third and eighth grade. It is a public school that is funded by the LeBron James Family Foundation. It was also announced that the Foundation plans to invest over $2M annually on this project. Despite the major investments, the school produced a major disappointment recently.

It was recently reported that the school’s eighth graders failed a state-wide math exam, raising major concerns. This led to James and his school receiving severe backlash from the natives of the district.

After the eighth graders failed to clear the math exam, the district’s school improvement czar, Keith Liechty-Clifford had a few words. Liechty-Clifford said, “It is discouraging. We had said all along this journey was going to be difficult because we’re starting with kids who are two years or more behind.

School board president, Dr. Derrick Hall too, remarked on the school’s performance. “I believe the pandemic has an impact. But it also has an impact on the non-selected kids as well; and the numbers that we’re seeing here would suggest that my non-selected kids who don’t have the same number of resources are actually performing better and I’m just trying to understand why. I think it’s fair to ask that question”, he said.

He further added, “When the I Promise School started, one of the things I was excited about was I thought this school could be an incubator where ideas could come out of this school that we could take and then inject into the operations of other buildings throughout the district. That’s why, looking at the data today, I’m so disappointed.”
