Will the Spurs thrive without Popovich, or is his leadership irreplaceable for the team's success?

“Of course, we all miss him, we hope he’s alright.” Victor Wembanyama sent out his prayers to Gregg Popovich as the veteran head coach was sidelined indefinitely because of an undisclosed health issue. Well, the incident reportedly occurred on Saturday night before the Wolves game as Coach Pop required urgent medical attention. Obviously, everyone is eager to know when he will return. But Wemby’s latest update has only added to the uncertainty.

Revealing if he has talked to Popovich yet, Victor said, “We don’t hear a lot from Pop, but let’s say they keep us informed as much as we’re allowed to know.” Yes, it is still not clear when the head coach will be back on the sidelines calling the shots for the Spurs. And Wemby is likely getting all the updates from the organization instead of directly from Pop.

However, the French Sensation remains optimistic. He said, “I’m not worried about him. I know he’s going to come back soon. But no, we’re not talking to him directly that much.” It has been four games since Popovich got sidelined and Mitch Johnson has taken over as the interim coach in his absence. Surprisingly, he has done a decent job so far, leading the Spurs to two wins in those four encounters.

Even on the night Coach Pop first faced health concerns, Johnson stepped up to the occasion and helped Victor Wembanyama and Co. beat the mighty Wolves. Moreover, he hinted on Monday that Popovich could return soon, “Right now his health is the number one priority and we support him in that a 100%. I talked to him last night. He’s in good spirits. He’ll be okay, he is okay. And we can’t wait to have him back.”

The beautiful player-coach bond between Victor Wembanyama and Gregg Popovich

Well, it is understandable why Wemby is so concerned about Coach Pop’s health. Yes, it has been only one year since he started playing under him. But they have developed a special bond during that short span. Moreover, the Frenchman even compared his relationship with Pop to that of Luke Skywalker and Master Yoda from Star Wars by sharing simultaneous images on his Instagram post.

Have an interesting take?

Sure enough, Wemby has always appreciated the coaching style of Popovich, “A big part of the role of a coach is to know when to give freedom to the players. We have great creators and great players on our team, and Pop gives them the right amount of advice, and he lets them be creative.” Popovich has been the man behind turning several players into superstars including Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, and now, Victor himself.

Meanwhile, the head coach reciprocated the sentiment by praising Wemby, “He’s a wonderful guy to coach who loves to be coached.” Obviously, the superstar Center has shown tremendous growth in just one year and is already one of the best players in the league. Hopefully, Coach Pop will have a speedy recovery and return soon so that the world gets to witness more of his amazing relationship with Wemby. Prayers Up.
