From a promising 3-2 kick-off to a harsh 3-16 record, the San Antonio Spurs face a brutal 15-game losing streak. The initial excitement, fueled by Victor Wembanyama, has dwindled, leaving the team at the bottom of the conference. However, despite this drastic downturn, the respect behind Gregg Popovich has avoided second-guessings from experts and fans alike. Amid the struggles, there is a notion that Popovich is strategically experimenting with lineups to provide valuable experience for his players.

The Spurs’ roster boasts talented individuals. However, the absence of a veteran presence, usually crucial for nurturing young players, is evident. With that, it seems like Popovich is yearning for the wisdom and influence of a former player in the current lineup.

From 2018 to 2021, DeMar DeRozan graced the court under Pop’s guidance. He was part of the Kawhi Leonard trade, marking a shift from his first nine NBA seasons with the Toronto Raptors. Now, in an anticipated face-off, the Spurs are gearing up to take on the Chicago Bulls, marking the first of two clashes at the AT&T Center.

Reflecting on DeRozan’s return, Gregg Popovich radiated positivity about the All-Star’s time with the Spurs. “He was a great teammate,” acknowledged Popovich. Furthermore, Pop highlighted DeRozan’s individual prowess in court: “You could always depend on him. He was a go-to guy that you knew had the ability to score against most people. But he was always in a good mood and he always had a smile on his face. He was fun to be around.”

For those familiar with Popovich’s no-nonsense approach, acknowledging someone being “fun” is rare. With the Spurs grappling with recent struggles, one can speculate that Popovich is yearning for the reliable characteristics of his former protegé, DeRozan.

Popovich is shaking things up in San Antonio

After swapping Tre Jones, a more natural guard, for Jeremy Sochan, Pop is changing things in San Antonio. In a recent bold move, he has swapped Sochan with Cedi Osman on the point. Now, after starting 19 games this season, Jeremy Sochan finds himself contemplating his role on the Spurs. The only instance Sochan came off the bench previously was last year after coming from an injury.

Despite the Spurs ultimately losing to the Minnesota Timberwolves, their new lineup put up a commendable fight against the NBA leaders, holding their ground until the fourth quarter.

Interestingly, the new situation favors Sochan despite the demotion. He has recently expressed frustration about playing the point and defending tough opponents on the side. On the flip side, Cedi Osman wholeheartedly embraces his new role and relishes Popovich’s trust in him.
