Alperen Sengun Ditched His Parents’ “Boring” Wish to Flourish in NBA With the Rockets

The Houston Rockets have endured a period of obscurity since their franchise star James Harden left them in 2021. Having been on a turbulent journey, Houston acquired multiple lottery picks in subsequent drafts, facilitating the collection of a pool of talented young players. Among these emerging stars is 21-year-old, Alperen Sengun.

The Rockets drafted Sengun with the No.16 pick in the 2021 NBA Draft. Originally an after-thought to Houston’s acquisition of Jalen Green, Sengun quickly earned appreciation due to his playmaking skills. However, the Turk might have pursued an entirely different sport, if circumstances had been different.

Alpi’s mother wanted him to become a swimmer

The Houston Rockets have had a promising start to the 2023-24 season. Under the leadership of Ime Udoka, Houston have pleasantly surprised many. The Rockets were almost hidden in the shadows of the NBA for the past few seasons. The emergence of 21-year-old Turkish center Alperen Sengun, however, has revitalized the franchise. Sengun has averaged 20.2 points, 9.1 rebounds and 5.6 assists per game this season. But, it all could have ended differently.

Alpi’s mother wanted her son to pursue a career in swimming. Recently, Sengun made an appearance on Paul George’s podcast Podcast P, in which he recalled being recruited by a swimming coach. He said, “I was taking class like basketball and swimming. But I was also doing other sports like soccer, tennis and other things. They like my height and other stuff, the coach in swimming class.” He further called the aquatic sport “boring”.

Alpi said, “It was just so boring. I am already a good swimmer, then they just show you how to do this. I didn’t wanna do that sh*t.” In hindsight, Sengun made the right decision, as he has emerged as one of the most promising talents in the NBA. His playing style, reminiscent of 2x MVP Nikola Jokic, has earned him the nickname “Baby Jokic”.

Alperen Sengun’s remarkable displays for Houston Rockets has drawn comparisons with Nikola Jokic. The 21-year-old’s incredible skills are reminiscent of the Serbian star. Like Jokic, Sengun possesses exceptional court vision and passing ability for a center, often initiating plays from the post. Additionally, both players exhibit versatility, showcasing the capability to score from various positions on the court.
