As the Golden State Warriors squad settled in their hotel rooms in Sacramento, Draymond Green couldn’t help but share a piece of his mind with the fans. Hopping right onto his podcast, Green immediately touched on Allen Iverson’s statue reveal from the previous week. Being one of the numerous AI fans while growing up, he resonated a stance akin to the global fans; the size of Allen Iverson’s statue. Despite the honor bestowed upon the NBA legend, its small stature quickly became a focal point of memes and surprise amongst fans.

The sculpture does not capture Iverson’s 6ft frame and is far off from the hustle and heart he displayed on the court. While pointing out the same things, Green found a valid argument. The 4-time champion claimed, “A – that statue is going outside the practice facility. The Philadelphia 76ers practice facility. B – there’s a row of them, same size as AI’s.” However, Green then mentioned that AI, after more than a decade of his days with Philly, does not have a statue at their game-time arena.

He claims, “Allen Iverson needs a life-size statue, larger than life-size statue outside of Wells Fargo Arena.” Currently, Iverson’s statue is part of the Philadelphia 76ers Walk of Fame lineup, which features players like Wilt Chamberlain, Julius Erving, and Charles Barkley.

His statue is crafted to be similar sized to the legends and placed at Penn Medicine Philadelphia 76ers Training Complex only to be accessible to staff, players, executives, and the media at the facility. However, when speaking of AI’s statue outside Philly’s game arena, the franchise’s future plans might keep it from happening anytime soon.

Draymond Green might have to wait a few years for his wish

Draymond Green is not wrong in his demands for Allen Iverson. AI spent his initial 12 years in Philly. He was a Rookie of the Year (1997), 11x All-Star, seven All-NBA selections, a four-time NBA scoring record, and 3 steals mantle. He is also a member of the NBA 75th Anniversary Team. However, as much as Philly would want to craft a life-sized, or bigger, sculpture of Iverson outside the Wells Fargo Arena, it will be more fruitful for them to sit on the idea.

Their current arena is under a lease, until the year 2031. With that, the franchise plans to host its events in a newly constructed 76 Place arena. Even though the team has shifted its timeline twice in the past, co-owner David Adelman sees the 2031 journey as a one-way ticket. The franchise also assured that the arena will “provide $1.9 billion in overall economic output” during the construction and a $400 million cheque annually to aid the city’s overall growth.

With that, Draymond Green and other AI fans will definitely have to wait on a statue outside the Sixers’ main arena.

However, if the uproar stays persistent, will the Sixers lean towards inaugurating an Iverson statue alongside their arena? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
