When the San Antonio Spurs selected a 19-year-old kid from France as the first pick in last year’s draft, many doubted the decision. But a year later, Victor Wembanyama has become one of the fastest-rising superstars after his amazing rookie season. Sure enough, no one has doubts about his talent anymore. However, the same cannot be said about his long-term health as fans are still worried about his lanky 209-pound frame. But Wemby might have ended those concerns with his latest revelation.
While most opponents had a hard time guarding Victor because of his versatile skillset, his rookie season exposed one major weakness in his game. Despite being 7’4, he was easily dominated by strong big men like Nikola Jokic and Joel Embiid because they had a significant weight advantage over the rookie. However, Wemby revealed in a recent interview that he has already added more pounds since he entered the league which could solve the issue, “10 kilos? No. Maybe about four to five kilos.” And once he gains enough muscle, Wemby might have no holes left in his game.
Moreover, he has also begun practicing yoga for better control of his body. When asked if the purpose of yoga was to gain more flexibility, Wemby replied, “That’s wrong; I am working my mobility, that’s it… it allows the body to move in a whole new dimension in terms of capacity, athletic capacity, so it’s really very important.”

Historically, most players of Victor’s height have their careers cut short because of constant injuries and the toll it takes on their lower body. The two biggest examples are Greg Oden and Hall of Famer Yao Ming, who couldn’t reach their maximum potential due to injury. With a chance to be great, Wemby needs to make sure that injury does not ruin his progress.
Victor Wembanyama can learn from Giannis Antetokounmpo’s journey
Just like Victor, Giannis was also a skinny kid when he entered the league eleven years ago. Weighing only 190 pounds and not having attained his maximum height yet, nothing stood out about the future champion. However, the Bucks trusted his potential and invested all their resources in his development. Sure enough, the risk paid off as Giannis soon increased a couple of inches to his height and also added nearly 50 pounds of muscle as his career progressed. And now, he is one of the strongest and most dominant big men in the league and people know him as ‘The Greek Freak.’
As a rookie, Wemby was already bigger than Giannis was when he joined. Moreover, he became an instant star averaging 21.4 points and nearly eleven rebounds last season. On top of that, he led the league in blocks, which is a historic feat for a first-year player. If he is able to attain a strong frame like Giannis has right now, he will have the perfect recipe to be one of the greatest ever. Do you believe Wemby can reach that goal?
