The USA advanced to the Semi-Finals of the FIBA World Cup after defeating Italy 100:63. It was an emphatic response after a disappointing six-point loss against Lithuania. This time around, the team didn’t just depend on their leading scorer, Anthony Edwards. This win also shattered many records as Team USA showcased their prowess yet again. As they enter the Semis, here’s a brief look at the records made by the team. Tyrese Haliburton became a part of the record books, too.

Team USA breaks records from long-range

This win came despite Anthony Edwards, who scored just three points. The United States of America showed its depth finally. The team had one of the highest-scoring games for the USA in any Quarter-Final of the FIBA World Cup. To overcome Edwards’ off-night, Tyrese Haliburton made six threes, which is a record for any USA player in the Quarter-Finals. Haliburton joined Patty Mills and Larry Ayuso to make six triples in a FIBA Quarter-Final game.

Mikal Bridges, who led the team with 24 points, also made four triples. alongside Haliburton, Klay Thompson, and Chauncey Billups, he is on the list to make four or more triples in the USA’s FIBA Quarter-Finals. Overall, the team made 17 triples on just 36 tries.

The 24 points by Bridges was also his FIBA World Cup high. Team Italy also made some records. This was their first quarter-final appearance after 25 years. In the 21st Century, Jazz swingman Simone Fontecchio’s 15 or more points in four games is the highest for any Italy player. The record is held by Antonello Riva, who had 15 or more in eight different games in 1990.

However, as a team, Italy made just 30.2% of their field goals and had their worst return of the tournament. Referred to as the “Greatest Italy Team”, they were expected to give more fight but crumbled against the USA’s depth and talent. This loss made for some emotional memories.

A crestfallen Italy locker room

After the loss, the whole team couldn’t muster up words and even cried. Coach Gianmarco Pozzecco consoled a crying Nicolo Melli. However, he himself struggled for words and couldn’t speak without showing his emotions.

On the other hand, team captain Luigi Datome appeared much more collected. He saw the positive side of things and appreciated that the team made it to the Quarter-Finals after two decades and a half.
