“I come from neighbourhoods where people don’t even talk to each other. It’s so much hate in the world… When people get to start laughing and joking for a game of ball, it’s cool to me” said Kevin Durant when talking about what basketball, and the Olympics, mean to him. Several talented athletes make their way to the NBA, but only a few of them ever receive the honor of representing their country on the international. To see the hate he described transform into unity for a brief moment is what may have motivated Kevin Durant to let himself be a part of 1 FIBA World Cup series and 4 separate Olympic games. However, even at his advanced age, is the possibility of another Olympic game on the table? Well, the veteran himself recently gave us an answer.
In a surprising turn of events, Kevin Durant came as the guest on ‘The Draymond Green Show’. Surprising since the history between Durant and Draymond Green isn’t the best one. Nevertheless, the conversation allowed the veterans to dive deep into various topics, including the Olympics. Without any hesitance, the Warriors power forward asked his former teammate: “Is there some chance you go get five Olympic gold medals in LA?” Durant did not take too long to think, and said “Yeah, that is, there’s a chance, there’s a chance”. After all, despite being 36 years of age, the Suns star’s passion hasn’t gone away.
“My thing always been, is like, ‘I want to still be on this level that I’m playing at when that time comes around’. I don’t want that. Don’t give me that ‘OG man, just come be one of the guys, and we need your presence’ type” Durant added. “Now, I want to hoop. If I go out, you know what I’m saying, and I want to be counted on to play minutes. You know what I mean, and you need me to knock down shots to help the team type s**t. I don’t want that farewell shit”.

Kevin Durant has already cemented his legacy as the greatest basketball player to have existed. He has won the gold medal in all his Olympic appearances, which made him the first male athlete in a team sport to win the accolade 4 times. On top of that, KD is also the leading scorer, male or female, in Olympic basketball competitions, with a total of 518 points. He passed the record during his recent stint in Paris, crossing the previous record of 488 points set by American women’s icon Lisa Leslie. Therefore, one would think that Durant does not have anything more to prove, right? Well, as long as the player himself feels he has more to give, who are we to deny him the privilege?

Many people may argue about who the greatest NBA player is. However, when it comes to the greatest Olympic player, no other name in the basketball community would receive more unanimous support. Even Steve Kerr admitted that “Kevin is the greatest men’s Olympic player of all time”, as seen in the newly released Netflix series ‘Court of Gold’. LeBron James highlighted Kerr’s remarks on social media and endorsed them by writing “Facts!!!!!!!!!!!”. With the 2028 Olympics set to be held in USA, in Los Angeles, Team USA would need its star player more than ever.
Kevin Durant’s comments have confirmed one thing. He is not set to retire from the international format anytime soon. Which is perfect, since his former Golden State Warriors teammate will have some company during the LA Games!
Will Stephen Curry join Kevin Durant in the 2028 LA Olympics?
Stephen Curry has spent the last 16 years establishing himself as among the most memorable players to ever exist in NBA history. Unfortunately, by this time last year, his legacy on the international stage was NIL. The NBA 3-point leader rectified this by joining Team USA during the 2024 Paris Olympics and becoming a key factor in the squad’s Gold Medal win. Even Kevin Durant admitted “Man, that was a God-like performance” after Curry saved his team from what could have been a humiliating defeat against Serbia. Stephen Curry made a major mark on the international stage, so why should he stop now?

An X user recently highlighted Stephen Curry doing a courtside interview during the recently held All-Star weekend. As the interviewer asked “You’re participating in the Los Angeles Olympics to try and repeat?”, the attendees gave out cheers. Curry visibly smiled and said “Never say never. For me, if I’m at a position where it makes sense, I would love to do it again. Like, the Olympics is unlike any other sporting event that I’ve ever been a part of just because, you know, you are just not only part of a basketball team, but the entire Team USA”.
