Being on the road is no excuse to not have a wonderful birthday bash. Draymond Green was reminded of this as his 35 birthday took place on the same day the Warriors faced off against the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden. From the videos shared on social media, Bay Area fans caught a glimpse of the dinner hosted by the team to mark the player’s special occasion. While the attendees included several key Warriors players and even Philadelphia Eagles Quarterback Jalen Hurts, the coaching staff wasn’t there to be seen. Steve Kerr confirmed this recently.
Mark Willard and Dan Dibley, hosts of the ‘95.7 The Game’ show, interviewed Steve Kerr after the game at Madison Square Garden. As the conversation progressed, the topic of discussion was soon shifted towards Stephen Curry’s upcoming 37 birthday and Draymond Green recently turning 35 years old. When asked if he had gotten Green a gift, the head coach denied it. Kerr had to receive a party invitation from Green before giving him a gift. Unfortunately, as the 59-year-old revealed, “I asked Draymond if the coaching staff could go with him, to wherever his party was last night. And there was a just a strange silence in response. So, I took it as a no”. Yikes!
Draymond Green’s silence was a snub to Steve Kerr and 10 other members of the coaching staff. The group includes names like Jerry Stackhouse, Ron Adams, Bruce Fraser, etc. It remains unconfirmed whether Drew Yoder, the team’s trainer, was among those snubbed. However, looking at how things went for the coaching staff, one can presume that Yoder also received the silent boot.

This apparent snub raises an important question: Why? Some coaching staff members may be new to the team. However, Draymond Green and Steve Kerr have shared a professional relationship for more than a decade. Along with Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson, the duo brought in the team’s Golden era. After all, they worked together to win 4 NBA championships! However, Kerr received the silent treatment while even NFL stars got the invite.
Even Buddy Hield was invited. The same Buddy Hield who had received criticism from Draymond Green back in December for performing poorly. However, as Kerr himself highlighted in the interview, “Yeah, Steph told me he’s one of his favorite teammates of all time. Buddy is that….. just the joy that he brings. The laughter. The upbeat nature regardless of how things are going whether he’s making shots or missing shots. He’s always in a good mood,” said Kerr. “And that stuff is crucial in a long season in the locker room you need guys like that and so everybody loves Buddy. He’s just a wonderful person”. Therefore, there was no chance he wouldn’t have been invited.

While one mustn’t speculate, there may be a good reason behind the snub. It may be a classic and cliché example of ‘Never Invite the Boss to Social Gatherings’. If anyone has watched that Beach House episode from Brooklyn 99, they would relate to how things can get awkward when the boss is around important events.
While Kerr and Green have moved beyond that point, the former is still the latter’s coach. The Golden State Warriors are currently in the middle of an NBA season. Therefore, either seeing his players have too much fun would not go well in Kerr’s mind, or the players would not be motivated enough to have fun with Kerr and the coaching staff present. If Steve Kerr himself had any reservations, he shouldn’t have worried. After all, during the time of the festival, the team goal was still in front of Draymond Green and co.

Draymond Green wished for a 5 ring while celebrating his birthday: “There’s 5 candles”
The last time the Golden State Warriors squad won the championship title was back in 2022. The next season, the team failed to get the better of the Lakers in the Conference Semi-Finals. They couldn’t even make it to the playoffs or the Play-In back in 2024. Before Jimmy Butler’s acquisition, it felt as if the team would experience a Déjà vu. Now, the Warriors hold the 6 seed. Therefore, the hope of securing another championship ring is back, and Draymond Green wants all the luck to follow him in its pursuit.
