When it comes to being the proudest dad of all time, no one’s probably beating LaVar Ball. All three of his sons have become accomplished names, arguably eclipsing his own stardom by multiple folds. So, it was only natural for his sons to be his strength when times got tougher for him. In fact, LaVar even had thoughts of death crossing his mind, but it was his sons who pulled him out of it.

LaVar recently shared a sad yet heartwarming story from his life with SLAM, where he discussed his condition and the challenges he faced. “I had an infection where I was in the hospital for over a month.” He then provided more details about how the infection in his foot worsened and spread to his bloodstream, saying, “That started spreading through my blood due to not paying attention to my diabetes. I ended up having to get my leg amputated.”

But that was just the beginning. He further explained, “First, they cut off a couple of toes. Then they cut off my foot. Then they said, We gotta go almost knee high for another surgery. Three surgeries. And then there were also the blood transfusions. Not one, not two, not three, four different times.”

LaVar reflects on the difficult physical toll of his surgeries and blood transfusions, admitting that at times he questioned whether it was worth enduring the pain. It went to a certain stage that thoughts of giving up also came to his mind. “It made me think, man, just kill me and let me go about my business,” he expressed. But it was LaMelo Ball and his sons, who came to the rescue, providing him with the support and strength he needed to keep going. “Seeing what my boys are doing out there, they’re like, Dad you’re the toughest dude / know. That made me keep going,” LaVar added. “It was good to have that backing from my boys. One of the things that makes me go is when they are all together.” After the support from his children, LaVar is now in much better shape.
