Adrian Wojnarowski's 'Go Bonnies'—Does this show the power of alumni support in sports?

No more Woj bombs! Yes, Adrian Wojnarowski left the basketball community stunned after he announced his retirement from ESPN and the news industry with a heartfelt message on X. But what next for the media veteran? Well, the 55-year-old is ready to embark on a new career path as he has taken a General Manager role for the men’s basketball program at his alma mater, St. Bonaventure University. And he seems quite hyped about the big change as he dropped a two-word message to let the hoops world know.

With Woj taking on the new role, Bonnies Basketball tweeted, “The St. Bonaventure Bonnies of The Mighty A10.” Sure enough, their new GM responded with a powerful message, “Let’s Go!” Following a seven-year stint at ESPN and breaking hundreds of trades and signings to the NBA World, the veteran is hoping to have a similar impact in his old home, “It is a thrill of a lifetime to be able to return to a university and community that I love in a role of service to our student-athletes, coaches, and institution.”

Moreover, Woj has deep ties with the University as he was their ‘Commencement speaker’ and even received an honorary degree two years ago. He was also honored as Jandoli School’s Alumnus of the Year back in 2019 and even sits on their Wall of Distinguished Graduates.

Sure enough, his elite hoop knowledge and the deep connections he has built in the community while working the media job will prove to be a huge advantage for his alma mater. “I am hopeful that I can bring value in a lot of areas to our basketball program and open doors for our young men’s futures in ways both professionally and personally,” Woj told ESPN.

With the recent introduction of transfer portals, the General Manager role has become a crucial one in college basketball. And who better to conduct NIL allocation and recruit young athletes than someone who’s been covering the sport and assessing hoopers for most of his life!

St. Bonaventure’s Athletic Director is thrilled to welcome Woj to his basketball program

While Woj expressed his excitement about the new job, the University is equally thrilled about the prominent sporting figure managing their basketball program. And university’s AD Bob Baretta couldn’t have asked for a better candidate, “Woj is the perfect person to fill this new role, combining his intimate knowledge of St. Bonaventure and our Franciscan values with a deep network of relationships he has built across the worlds of professional and intercollegiate basketball.”

Then, the director also commended Adrian’s courage to pursue a new path, “The fact that the prominent journalist in his field is willing to walk away from a lucrative media career to serve his alma mater in a support role is a testament to his love and passion for Bona’s.” Well, it’s been 3 years since the Bonaventure Bonnies last won the A10 Regular season and tournament championships.

But with Woj by their side, they will surely hope to repeat the feat once again very soon.
