The Swoosh brand has won plenty of battles in this rivalry, thanks to the Bulls legend Michael Jordan. After the launch of MJ’s signature shoe line Air Jordan, Nike has pretty much reigned supreme. Following LeBron James, even Victor Wembanyama has also opted for the trusted brand, making a massive dent in the rivalry.

While Wemby is yet to get a signature sneaker line, the star’s recent collab in G.T Hustle 2 massive success. Minutes into the launch priced at $170, the shoes were sold out, eventually leaving the makers with no option other than surging the price.

However, Anthony Edwards might change the narrative in the long-standing rivalry. The 22-year-old took the fight directly to the opponents debuting his signature sneaker line AE1 in the 2023-24 season, effortlessly unsettling the sneaker business in the NBA world. Complex rated the release as the best available signature sneaker in the NBA right now, putting Nike LeBron 21 at second place.

The shoe which was launched at $120, saw a 22% increase in the retail price after the steady demand for the product. The Game 6 Low MX Grey could see a skyrocket in sales, considering the context of the game.

That being said, Edwards’ pursuits on the field have shown major signs of him emulating the legendary MJ.

Will Anthony Edwards transform from MJ-lookalike to MJ?

With a few similarities in his playing style, Ant-Man entered this season with a rousing MJ comparison. Many countered it and voted against it. Along the same lines, MJ’s ex-BFF Charles Barkley had a special request to the fans. “Please America, please stop the Michael Jordan stuff. This guy has had one good playoff run. I think he’s going to be a great player,” he said.

However, throughout the season, Edwards consistently displayed his potential via his athletics and clutch abilities. Notably, he faced massive backfire when he missed three FTs in a row and blew the game in a regular season. This was eventually swept under the rags when Jordan himself declared he saw similarities in the youngster game through Chris Broussard, a veteran reporter.

Nevertheless, Edwards’ potential to resurrect Adidas and put them on top once again speaks volumes about this comparison. Especially since it was Michael Jordan who boosted the struggling Nike’s basketball sneaker business with an iconic deal in the late 1980s. The Swoosh brand had a tough time dealing with Reebok and Converse in the early 80s and it was the Air Jordon deal that saved them.

Will Anthony Edwards script a similar story with Adidas? Let us know in the comments.
