The officiating in the NBA often causes controversies with subjective calls overturned. In the yesteryears, NBA officials determined a foul and with no replay center to review it, they stuck with the decision. However, as technology advances, sports continue to take advantage of it entirely, with many leagues adopting video technology to review decisions. Even LeBron James saw a foul call overturned against the Nuggets in the previous campaign. Adam Silver’s efforts to boost viewership in the league don’t get the same love from everyone.
You see, in any sports debate, some favor the cause, while others think it is a total waste of time. The officiating in the league has caused concerns for players and coaches with sometimes out-of-bound calls misjudged. Moreover, the WNBA game between the New York Liberty and Minnesota Lynx raised the bar for WNBA players. Yet, one particular controversy arose regarding a foul call.
The Liberty won the WNBA title in contentious circumstances when Breanna Stewart received a foul call which should not have stood. In the aftermath, Stewart hit two free throws to take the game to overtime. The Lynx players thought the foul call was ‘injust’, and they believed the game to be done and dusted. The new officiating caused concerns to many players, but Paul George seems pleased.

In the latest episode of Podcast P with Paul George, the 76ers guard detailed the foul calls in the NBA. “I do think, now with this new thing they are implementing in the NBA, where you can challenge the foul. And if that foul, like, they can catch it if it was a travel before the foul call. They are reviewing more, yeah!” expressed PG, loving the new change in calls.
He continued, “That’s nice and it’s changed the game in the NBA. We’ve had like multiple instances already early in our season, where, like, someone’s got to foul and it’s been reversed instead of it being a foul, it was another call. This happened like multiple times and this is a game-changer.”

For Sabrina Ionescu, she achieved her dream of winning the WNBA title. During her college days, the basketball player achieved everything there was to win. But the WNBA championship offers a sweet taste of victory.
“I mean, we’re champions. I think [officating] is part of the playoffs. If you’ve watched any series, officiating never goes the way that you want it. We could have said the same thing about Game 4,” cited Sabrina.

Overturning foul calls remain common in the game these days. In the men’s game, we often see travel calls included before the actual foul took place. When LeBron James and the Lakers faced the Denver Nuggets, they had a foul call overturned, with LeBron getting irked with the call.

Moreover, he couldn’t believe the call from the refs and questioned the officiating in the league. The game’s getting fast and accurate and Adam Silver wants the NBA to adopt new rules. He aims to bring more viewership to the league with the help of technology and making the game fair and square. But certainly, to some people’s dismay, it’s far from the better product.
