While it seemed like the controversial play might slip away, the referees’ post-game pool report revealed a shocking update. And speaking to the press, refs Crew Chief James Williams admitted that the refs failed to call the loose ball foul on Donte DiVincenzo. During the last possession of the game, the players engaged in a 20-second tussle to get the possession of the ball. The NY Knicks were trailing behind by one point and they badly required a bucket to win the game. The Pistons’ Ausar Thompson stole the ball and headed for the bucket. However, he was tackled down by Knicks’ guard DiVincenzo, and the refs failed to call the reach in foul. Eventually, the home team went on to win the game with Josh Hart’s tough layup.
However, after the pool report, refs concluded that Thompson lost the possession of the ball before his contact with DiVincenzo. Most importantly, the refs admitted that they failed to call loose ball foul. This statement will lead to only one possibility, which is the Pistons’ appeal to the league.
And, the report also stated that the Detroit side could win the appeal, which in itself was a rare case in the history of the league. Leaving the rest in the hand of the NBA commissioner, Adam Silver.
