Is the NBA secretly cutting costs at the expense of game quality with shorter nets?

Ah, the sweet sound of a basketball going through the net. It’s like music to the ears for every hooper. And if you are an elite shooter like Damian Lillard, who’s spent his entire life putting the ball in the basket, you are bound to notice even the slightest of differences from the usual feeling. Sure enough, that’s exactly what happened after Dame played the first 2 games of this season, as he exposed, rather questioned, a major change in the league’s equipment. It led to fans questioning Adam Silver, especially after JJ Redick recently voiced similar issues.

Revealing his confusion to the entire world, Dame tweeted, “Is it me or it seem like the nets short or something different w these NBA nets.” Yes, the Bucks superstar believes that the nets attached to the basket might be a bit shorter than what fans are used to seeing, which is causing the ball to sometimes get stuck after a made shot.

Well, there is no solid proof that the nets are shorter this year, while 18” in length– is the officially mentioned size, but if a seasoned veteran like Lillard is saying it, there could be something different. After all, who knows the basket better than a player who has made 2616 three-pointers in his career? Surprisingly, this is not the first time this season that someone has questioned the equipment.

After the Lakers won their first game, JJ Redick had a strange concern with the basketballs used on opening night, “I’m not sure why we’re playing in real games — I’m being dead serious — I’m not sure why we’re playing in real games with brand-new basketballs. Anybody who’s ever touched an NBA ball brand new, it’s a different feel and touch than a worn-in basketball.” Obviously, it’s hard to get a good grip on a new basketball, and JJ claimed that was part of the reason his team had an abysmal shooting night.

He even planned on raising the issue to the management, “I’m going to send in a request for the league tomorrow that we can play with worn-in basketballs.” With Dame and JJ voicing their concerns, the community raced to bring Adam Silver into the spotlight.

NBA world ‘agrees’ with Damian Lillard, one fan claims Adam Silver is “cutting costs”!

Upon hearing Lillard’s concern, one netizen came to the conclusion that the league is “cutting costs” by changing their equipment. Well, even if that’s the case, using a different/shorter net is unlikely to make a lot of difference in the finances of a multi-billion-dollar organization. Moreover, they recently inked a $76 billion media rights deal, so there might be no need to take these measures anyway.

However, many fans seemed to agree with Dame as comments like “Nah you def right about the nets being a bit shorter this season, especially on the swishes,” and “They look like college netssss go” began flooding in.

Have an interesting take?

While basketball goes straight through the net to hit the floor during swishes, fans have noticed that this season, the ball is often getting stuck in the net. And that’s what happens a lot of times in college ball as they use a shorter net.

Meanwhile, one fan denied Dame’s observation and ‘uno reversed’ the blame on him, “It’s just you unc.” Obviously, the Bucks star has been in this league for twelve years and the netizen used his age and experience against him in this argument.

On the other hand, one netizen was so taken aback by Damian Lillard’s bizarre observation that he couldn’t even process the tweet at first glance, “Thought he was talking about the Brooklyn Nets having an abnormally short roster lmao.”

Well, it is understandable how some fans could get confused by the Milwaukee Bucks star’s tweet. But even if there is a change in the nets, it has not affected the sharpshooter’s performance so far as he is averaging 29 points in two games. And hopefully, Damian Lillard will continue this form regardless of the length of the net or any other factor on the court.
