Over the next three days, the NBA world will be fixated on the annual All-Star weekend. All eyes will be on Stephen Curry and co, as the Bay Area is set to host the event for the first time since 2000. With so many expectations and duties placed on their shoulders, the squad would probably need some help, right? Well, Adam Silver was more than obliged to provide that to them, in the form of 3 new NBA All-Stars. However, they are not what you may expect.

The official X account of the NBA recently featured a highlight from the 2025 NBA All-Star Technology Summit. The same saw the NBA commissioner revealing the Warriors squad utilizing three robots to assist them in their on-court activities. A.B.E. (Automated Basketball Engine) was used by Stephen Curry to assist him in rebounds and passes to players during shooting sessions. The device would catch a ball and then throw it in the player’s direction so that his shots went uninterrupted in a streak.

M.I.M.I.C. (Motion & Intercept Modular-Interface Coordination) came to great use for Steve Kerr. After all, the Warriors head coach was able to utilize several of the same robots to assist him in designing and teaching plays. Kerr wasn’t afraid to treat the M.I.M.I.C. robots just like his own players. From criticizing them for not being on a specific spot to yelling “Get the f**k out of here, give me another one” to one robot, Kerr was giving them the full player experience. After all, as he stated, “I just treat them like any other player. It kind of feels natural at this point”.

Meanwhile, Draymond Green got some help too, in the form of K.I.T. (Kinematic Interface Tool). This particular robot assists in providing general companionship to players and staff. All in the effort to improve “mental health” and “personal growth”, which sometimes might get overlooked. From interacting with George Clooney movies to motivating the player through workouts, K.I.T. indicates being the ideal teammate to have. And for someone like Draymond Green, who is notorious for having had his fair share of troubles with his old teammates, having one that vibes with him sounds great. Even if that teammate is a robot.

Adam Silver introduced all three robots as the “latest NBA All-Stars”. After all, while nothing can be said about their playing skills, their values can certainly provide a big boost to the actual All-Stars whenever their need is required.

What’s your perspective on:

Are robots the future of the NBA, or is this just a gimmick to boost ratings?

The 2025 NBA All-Star Technology Summit marked the 25 edition of this All-Star Weekend event. Surprisingly, the first summit took place the last time the Bay Area hosted the weekend! Back then, the rise of mobile phones and the internet were topics that occupied everyone’s minds. The NBA made use of this opportunity by putting Shaquille O’Neal on a panel, alongside Trailblazers guard Steve Smith and Larry Irving, then an adviser to Bill Clinton and Magic Johnson. The panel discussed the lack of internet access for Black Americans. Shifting from lack of internet access to robots assisting NBA players, one realizes how far we have come in just a quarter century.

The enthusiasm displayed by the Warriors squad in the video promoted just how efficient AI can be on the NBA court. However, if there is someone who needs to be careful when it comes to Artificial Intelligence, then it is Stephen Curry. After all, AI would have almost convinced some NBA fans that the Three-Point Leader’s days with the Golden State Warriors were at an end.

Back in late January, a video had started making the rounds of social media. It highlighted Stephen Curry participating in a presser, which wasn’t an uncommon thing to see. What was shocking, however, was when Curry stated, “I’m requesting to be traded to the Lakers. I want to play with LeBron and AD. I can’t win with this team. Literally a team full of G-Leaguers”. WOW!

With ‘thedangerousai’ being the username of the account that posted the video people considered that the video was fake. Regardless of that, it was still convincing enough to fool many. Comments like “I told it was real help (crying emojis) until I read the comments” to “This looks too real! Stop it!” highlighted how social media users fell for the trap.

The robots utilized by the Warriors highlight the benefits AI can have on society. At the same time, Stephen Curry’s fake video showed its dangerous side, too. Therefore, with technology on the rise, one can only hope that the world is careful with how the technology is utilized. If it can help the Bay Area improve their win record and provide Curry with another championship trophy, then all the better!
