Since the 2019-2020 NBA season, the league required all the teams to have a Mental Health department within their individual franchise. This initiative encouraged many players to be more open about their mental health issues and also to seek help. It was a welcome change for both the league and the fans, as it helps in eliminating the taboo that is attached to the issues of the mind.
Sonya Curry, an educator, an author, and also an NBA royalty, had her moment of reckoning when she sat with her therapist while she was going through a midlife crisis.

Sonya Curry is a multifaceted person. She ran a Montessori school and also raised her three kids. Two of her kids are current NBA players Stephen Curry and Seth Curry. In her forties, she chose to retire from her School and focus on other things. This was the time her daughter, Sydel, also graduated and transitioned into her adult life. It was a drastic shift for Sonya, who, until then, had to be on her toes by being externally focussed. She soon hit a roadblock and realized that something was not right about her mind space.
Sonya?s book, ?Fierce Love: A Memoir of Family, Faith, and Purpose? is a great read for everyone. In an interview with Jemele Hill, she opened up about the episode in her book that she wrote about being diagnosed with depression. She tells Jemele that it was very hard for her to accept it. And goes on to say that, “Absolutely Not! How Dare You?!” were her instant reactions to her depression diagnosis.

In this social media age, anxiety and stress are on the rise. There are emotional triggers everywhere. Anger and frustration among the youth are on the rise. Lack of awareness and the stigma attached to such issues prevent people from reaching out for help. That is why the Mental Health discussion is the need of the hour.

NBA stars Kevin Love, DeMar DeRozan, and Sonya Curry coming out in public about their struggles with mental health, will empower more people to be open up. The Milwaukee Bucks superstar, Giannis Antetokounmpo donating a million dollars for mental health services, shows that we are moving in the right direction. This crusade has only just begun. More people and more avenues are needed for this out reach to serve its purpose.
