Is Morey's $2.1 million gamble on Yabusele a genius move or a desperate shot in the dark?

Allen Iverson is arguably the most iconic figure in the history of basketball, outside of Michael Jordan. The Philadelphia 76ers legend might have just stood at 6 feet and weighed 165 pounds, but he sure made up for it with his larger-than-life presence on and off the court. However, the man who hated losing, just never won a ring. Philly may not have found another like AI, but Daryl Morey and Co. are definitely closer than ever, as they can now fast-track the franchise’s title chase.

The 2024 Olympics’ standout Frenchman, Guerschon Yabusele, is touted to be the final piece to the puzzle that was the Sixers. Morey and Co. have worked too hard and long, meticulously adding and removing pieces to set a championship-winning roster to finally bring a title to the franchise after 41 years! Or if you’re feeling a little adventurous, it has been 15,072 days or 495 months (at the time of writing) since the Philly side last won a ring in 1983.

With the franchise staples Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey along with the high-profile acquisition of star forward, Paul George, Nick Nurse was still in a dilemma as to the depth problem in the forward position. He needed someone reliable on the bench. Watching the 6’8, 271-pound power forward at the Olympics provided the solution to Coach Nurse’s dilemma, who then offered him a 1-year $2.1 million deal, as NBA insider Zach Lowe would now attest. “Yabu may not be tall but he has, let’s call them, other dimensional advantages he does in his body type that are frankly astonishing to look upon when you see them at close range.

“I love the Sixers. I think they’re going to be awesome…This team has the upside to finally get to the Conference Finals in the post-Iverson era and actually win the title. I think that Big Three is that good!” he said in the latest episode of The Lowe Post. They sure are. Yabusele certainly made enough noise with the Olympic silver medalists for the NBA to welcome him back again.

There’s no way we are going to forget his posterizing dunk on none other than LeBron James in the gold medal game any time soon! But how well can he help the ‘City of Brotherly Love’?

Guerschon Yabusele might low-key be the ‘answer’ for the Philadelphia 76ers

Having been selected as the first-round pick by the Boston Celtics in 2016, the 28-year-old played two seasons for the team. During Yabusele’s time with the Cs, he averaged 2.3 points and 1.4 rebounds while shooting 44.2% from the field. But the French native didn’t last long in the NBA, quickly moving overseas and making a name for himself with the EuroLeague and Real Madrid. But the real deal was his time with the European basketball leagues where Yabusele’s skills were honed, turning him into an efficient 3-and-D wing.

His abilities to attack the paint and stretch the floor proved to be a difficult challenge to overcome for his opponents. Moreover, his size puts him in the perfect position to be the post-defender, his pure strength making him almost unmovable in the post. Aside from that, the man’s a team player. Guerschon will be coming to a Philadelphia 76ers team stacked with a superstar core and veteran depth.

That naturally would mean the 2x Liga ACB champion will find himself taking the role of a rotation player. But from his Olympic performances, we have seen that Yabusele thrives beside star players. In his last 3 seasons with EuroLeague, he shot a consistent 40% from the deep. In addition, he had a breakout year, playing nearly 24 minutes per game and averaging 10.5 points and a career-high 4.9 rebounds.

And as we mentioned above, his lack of fearlessness as seen in his matching up with Bron, will go over well with the passionate Philly crowd. In all honesty, if the Dreux native does this right, Yabusele has all the right tools to become a household name in Philadelphia. And help bring that elusive fourth championship to the city.
