Davidson Assistant Coach Matt Matheny’s recollection of coaching Curry offers valuable insights into the early stages of his recruiting process. Matheny vividly recalls their initial positive conversations about Davidson and Curry’s basketball skills. Of course, the conversation left him optimistic about the prospect of recruiting the young talent.

“In the beginning, I remember having very good conversations with Steph about Davidson, about his game. So, we were feeling really really good. And then all of a sudden, I couldn’t get Steph on the Phone. And I had the sense that ‘Oh, no, that means all these colleges are now getting involved, and it’s starting to blow up on us,'” Matheny said.

However, things took an unexpected turn when Matheny couldn’t get in touch with Curry for a considerable period. The coach began to worry that other colleges might be showing strong interest in the rising star. This caused him to panic and seek information from Curry’s high school coach and others in his circle.

“So, I started to panic. I started reaching out to his high school coach. I start reaching out to people around him. And still nothing. And I finally, about ten days later, get Steph on the phone,” Matheny added.

After almost ten days of anxious attempts, Matheny finally managed to reach Curry. To Matheny’s surprise, Curry revealed that his mother had taken his phone away for two weeks. The reason behind this unusual punishment was that one of Curry’s friends had sent him a text containing a curse word, and his mother had seen it. It was a unique and somewhat humorous revelation, showing the tight-knit relationship between Curry and his mother, Sonya Curry.

The incident sheds light on the challenges and distractions young athletes may encounter during their recruiting process. Despite the temporary communication setback, Davidson was fortunate to secure Curry’s commitment. After all, this led to an illustrious college career, laying the foundation for his remarkable success in the NBA.

The documentary’s inclusion of this anecdote adds depth to Curry’s journey as a basketball player. It emphasizes the significant role of family support and discipline in shaping his path to greatness.
