One thing about Anthony Edwards is that he is going to yap. Whether it’s his idol he is playing against or a 14-year veteran, he is going to trash-talk anyone and everyone. And he backs up his talk with his on-court performance, too. Saturday’s Game 1 win was a prime example.
The Minnesota Timberwolves opened their postseason by crushing the Phoenix Suns in Game 1 of the first round, thanks in large part to Edwards’ big night. Edwards scored 18 of his 33 points in the third quarter to lead the T-Wolves to a tone-setting 120-95 victory. However, the highlight of the quarter was Edwards’ playful taunt to his childhood idol. The ABC cameras caught the T-Wolves star calling Kevin Durant “old a** n****” after he drained a smooth three-pointer to extend the Timberwolves lead to 16.

However, KD is not the only one. Kawhi Leonard, Paul George, and other veterans have all been on the receiving end of these old claims from Edwards. Addressing Edwards’ trash-talking on his Podcast P with Paul George, PG said, “I mean, we are old. But we all gon get old. Anthony Edwards be careful what you wish for. But I think it’s more sort of giving flowers, and I think he gave the flowers.”

Speaking of stars getting old, with LeBron James and Stephen Curry now in the twilight years of their career, the league will eventually need a new face. While several young players have emerged as potential successors, notably Jayson Tatum, Ja Morant, and Luka Doncic, one player who boldly stakes his claim is Anthony Edwards. And Paul George certainly agrees. “I heard him saying that he’s going to be the face of the league in about two-three years. I think even less than that. I just love his approach. I love his tenacity. He is challenging the peers at his age now and he is going after the veterans that’s been 10+ years in the game,” added PG.
Edwards already has the stats in place. Averaging 25.9 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 5.1 assists on a 46.1% clip from the field, he has been the driving force behind Minnesota’s success this season. But it’s his unwavering confidence and self-belief that set him apart. Edwards boasts a rare combination of skill, athleticism, and charisma, reminiscent of Michael Jordan.
