With an MVP and multiple All-Stars obtained, Joel Embiid had only one intention with the Philadelphia 76ers this season. He wants to stay healthy during the playoffs to lead an unscathed postseason run. To bolster the results, the big man made a startling claim during media day. “If I had to guess, I would probably never play back-to-backs the rest of my career,” said Embiid. And so, his disappointing season debut might be the only game he plays during the current stretch.
In his first game of the season, the Sixers suffered an embarrassing defeat to the New York Knicks. The Process only hit two of his 11 shot attempts, compiling only 13 points and five assists. Now, Philly has to run their ship again without any rest. Likewise, during the clash against the Cleveland Cavaliers, Embiid will willingly sit.
Or maybe he was just being a troll at the start of the season.

Following the crushing loss to the Knicks, Joel Embiid spoke about the possibility of playing against the undefeated Cavs. “I want to but that’s up to them,” the 76ers’ imposing center surprisingly said. For context, Embiid still wears a brace on his left knee on which he suffered a torn meniscus last season.
So far, it seemed like he wanted to take the utmost caution in monitoring his recovery. The 76ers too were on board, suffering a $100,000 fine as a result. Yet, it’s also vital to consider how Joel Embiid might have rested longer because of his suspension for the incident with Marcus Hayes.
Moreover, this isn’t the only back-to-back he indicated he would play. “I know I said I’d never play back-to-backs, but I’m a troll,” the 30-year-old truthfully admitted.

What’s your perspective on:
Is Joel Embiid's 'no back-to-backs' strategy a smart move or a risky gamble for the 76ers?
Have an interesting take?
Given the health trajectory of Embiid, he often suffers immense wear and tear during the regular season. Hence, he’s unable to maintain optimal fitness when April comes along. However, this season, he has taken appropriate measures to ensure his health remains unaffected because of the strains of the regular season.
The first move came from Daryl Morey. The addition of Paul George, a third star, provides some relief for Embiid, who won’t have to push himself for the Sixers to have a decent regular season record. With Maxey and PG13 on his flanks, the bruising center can easily deflect and manage himself.
Then there are also his offseason efforts. “I think I lost about 25-30 [pounds]. I still got a ways to go, still want to lose more,” Embiid said on the RTRS podcast. It helps take some pressure off his knees. However, at the same time, Joel Embiid must adjust his game according to his transformed physique.

One way of testing whether his ideologies are paving the way for better results is through practical testing. The Cleveland Cavaliers remain undefeated and have one of the best defenses in the league. For Joel Embiid, there isn’t a better time to test himself early in the season and find a pattern that balances both strain and output.
For that purpose, it may be wise if Philadelphia allows him to participate against the Eastern powerhouse. But given the history of his ailments, they might decide not to take a chance. What do you think the organization should do? Let us know your views in the comments below.
