NBA 2K21 is coming up with the latest announcements of assigning cover athletes. This week, we learned that Damian Lillard from the Blazers would be one of the picks. However, the recent player selected for the cover does not surprise us at all. It is indeed a gesture to honor a legend who has given his blood, sweat, and tears for the game.
One cannot just statistically analyze what this man did for the NBA. Kobe Bryant is perhaps one of the greatest players of all times, and comparing his records won’t do any good. Anthony Davis was the cover athlete for NBA 2K20, Damian Lillard will be on the cover photo for PS4, Xbox One, PC, Nintendo Switch.
Kobe will feature two covers simultaneously. For PS 5 – “The Next Gen Mamba Edition,” and “Current Gen Mamba Forever Edition” for PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Switch.

We learned that New Orleans Pelican player Zion Williamson would be the second in line after Damian Lillard featuring as the cover athlete. It became quite apparent that 2K was holding back the big news for good reasons. This was expected from 2K as when Kobe took his retirement in 2016, and they made him cover athlete on the Legends Edition 2K17.

He was also the primary cover athlete for the 2K10. The tragedy that befell him and his family shook the entire world. 2K has, unsurprisingly, paid homage to The Black Mamba.
Release date uncertain as of yet

We already had Kobe as an unlockable player in 2K19 and 2K20 so we can expect it again. As for the release date, nothing was sure. 2K kept things tight. Nevertheless, after revealing the third and final athlete for the cover, they officially announced the pre-order. Although it is not yet confirmed, a speculative guess would say it will be released within the first week of September 2020.
