The franchise was founded in the 1995 as a part of the league’s expansion to Canada. Currently, it remains the only franchise in the NBA that is based in Canada.

After a few initial seasons of struggle, the Trail Blazers started contending for the play-off spots. Vince Carter were added to the Toronto Raptors roster in a trade in the 1998 NBA Draft. Carter led them to their first Play off series win in 2001. In 2004, he was traded to the New Jersey Nets.

In 2006, Chris Bosh emerged as the new star for the Trail Blazers, when they reached the first play-off in five years capturing the Atlantic Division title. In each of the next three seasons, they made it to the play-off but failed in the post season. Bosh departed to sign with the Miami Heat in 2010, leaving the Raptors to a rebuilding phase.

Before the 2018/19 season, the Raptors were in a high profile trade that saw Kawhi Leonard and Danny Green coming joining the Toronto Raptors Roster, apart from Marc Gasol. They won the first championship in that season, but couldn’t hold onto the duo after that.

In the 2019/20 NBA season, the Raptors would be looking to live up to the defending champions tag under Nick Nurse.
