Last night, the NFL game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Buffalo Bills ended controversially. This largely stemmed from the overtime rules. After the normal time, it was more or less a coin flip that decided the course of the game. This time around, the Buffalo Bills got the short end of the stick, and many criticized the rules. Among the critics was Joe Gibbs Racing driver Denny Hamlin.

He tweeted, “And THIS is the only loophole to a perfect sport and game. It’s an absolute shame that both teams don’t get to touch the ball and it’s the result of a coin flip. But Holy Sh**! What a game!

This was actually a far cry from three years ago when the Chiefs were in the same position as the Bills. Around that time, it was the Tom Brady-led New England Patriots who emerged victorious. In all honesty, the overtime hands the coin toss winner an enormous advantage.

What made many mad was the fact that in most other sports, both teams have a chance to turn things around. For example in soccer, if the game is still tied after 90 minutes and extra time, both teams play 15 minutes each of injury time. On that occasion, one team kicks off the first half, then the other team kicks off the second half, irrespective of who scored.

However, in the NFL the team that wins the coin toss has a golden opportunity to win. In other words, the team that wins the coin toss gets a chance for a touchdown and end the game. Of course, many fans watching the game called for a change in the regulations in order to make things fairer for both teams. Aside from Hamlin, Jimmie Johnson also had some harsh words for the overtime rules.
