The NFL season opened with a nerve-racking game ending with an astonishing result. The defending Super Bowl champions were defeated by a team that failed to qualify for last season’s playoffs. Detroit Lions‘ unexpected victory over the Kansas City Chiefs stunned the latter’s fans. One of those disappointed Chiefs’ admirers is former racer Kenny Wallace.

In a thriller that went down to the wire, the Detroit Lions overturned a six-point deficit to beat the Kansas City Chiefs 21-20. Taking to Instagram, Wallace shared his sentiments about the Chiefs’ heart-breaking loss. He laced it with a personal anecdote to dispense a powerful truth about the sporting world. He passed on the lesson that he learned from racing veteran Kenny Schrader.

Kenny Wallace began by relaying the loss suffered by quarterback Patrick Mahomes‘ football team. Now, Wallace himself is no stranger to constant wins and losses in sporting competitions. He recalled dirt racing in 2012 when he started the year on a high note. Herman’s relentless victory in Volusia Speedway Park compelled racing champion Tony Stewart to congratulate him.

“Last night, Thursday night, the Kansas City Chiefs, NFL football team, they lost to the lowly Detroit Lions. The Detroit Lions. It’s a reminder for me about competition. You know, 2012, I go to the Volusia Speedway Park, down around the Daytona Speedway. It’s a dirt race. Whole dirt weekend. So I’m going to run 8 straight nights but I can run 7 of them. And, I win 3 out of 7. I mean I’m the s**t. Tony Stewart comes down at me. And he goes, you know when you won 1 of them and I thought you know Herm got him a win. He says, when you got the second win I thought wow. When I won the 3rd one, Tony Stewart told me, I gotta go down and see him. That’s a big deal.”

Wallace said he was thankful for Stewart’s encouragement. But he learned a bigger lesson through racing veteran Kenny Schrader. Schrader, with all his years of accumulated wisdom, conveyed a pertinent message about sports and about life itself. He shrewdly pointed out that nothing lasts forever and all highs and lows of life eventually end.

Kenny continued, “I’m so grateful Tony Stewart walks all the way down to me and gives me praise, but Kenny Schrader is right there. This is where the wisdom comes in. I look at Tony Stewart and I said, yeah this is unbelievable! I can’t believe I’m winning so much…Kenny Schrader puts his arm on my shoulder and he says, don’t worry, it’ll end.”

Kenny Wallace remembered he was involved in a collision after those wins. The wreck affected his car far too much to carry on the winning streak, and he experienced brutal losses for the rest of the year. That’s when he realized the meaning of Schrader’s words.

Wallace said, “He was right. I went on a h*ll of a terror that year, 2012. Come back to St Louis after winning 3 of 7 at Volusia. Which was a big deal coz there was a 100 cars there every night. That was kinda my introduction to dirt racing. I was winning and I get really good that year. Later on that year, I got in a wreck towards the very end of the year. It changed that car. And I couldn’t hit my a** and just quit winning.”

Finally, Wallace explained the crux of his narration. He told all the Chiefs’ fans that competition was an inevitable part of sport and it was impossible to have the same result all the time. Wallace won continuous races and then lost the rest of the year. Similarly, the Kansas City Chiefs won the Super Bowl and then lost this game and a new winner emerged in the form of the Detroit Lions.

“So for all you Kansas City Chief’s fans, you know you won 2 superbowls. I can see Schrader right now putting his hand on the shoulder, don’t worry, it’ll end!…Listen the one thing about sports is that when… you feel euphoria, we’re winning, we’re winning! Because it’s so unbelievable. Don’t worry, it’s going to end…The moral of the story is this, number 1, be careful young man, competition will kill you,” he said.

“And number 2, you’re not going to win it all the time. That’s the way life is meant to be, up down, up down. So, let’s say the Kansas City Chiefs, they’re still going to win the Super Bowl. That’s not the story. The story is this; they lost. To the lowly Detroit Lions. Which one day, the Detroit Lions will not be the lowly Detroit Lions coz that’s the way sports are meant to be. Competition will kill you and I’ve been through this,” he added.
