The answer, however, wasn’t as straightforward for some of his fellow drivers. They speculated that the nickname had something to do with tire smoke or even Stewart’s fiery personality. Cole Custer even mentioned hearing two stories behind the name, one related to burnouts and the other to engine failures during Stewart’s IndyCar days.

Chase Briscoe shared an interesting perspective. “I was always told it was when he went and ran the chili bowl. He wasn’t supposed to run the chili bowl. He ended up running under the name Smoke Johnson, and that’s why they call him Smoke.” The nickname ‘Smoke’ serves as a reminder of the colorful characters and stories that make NASCAR so unique.
