YouTuber and medical professional, ‘Doctor Mike’, analyzed a number of massive motorsport wrecks. Among them, he talked about a major accident during the 2020 Daytona 500 involving Ryan Newman. Over here, Newman was ahead of Ryan Blaney, when the latter spun him out. Newman hit the wall hard and ricocheted back onto the track before another car crashed into him.

Doctor Mike immediately noted that Newman’s #6 car was fish-tailing, and was left stunned at the rest of the scene. He even observed that the side impact was really hard, which puts a lot of strain on the neck.
As per his analysis, this was relatively okay, because there was no abrupt deceleration, which could adversely affect the organs. He said, “There’s no rapid stop where you have that inertia of the organs potentially experiencing a high G-force. So this sliding effect is actually life-saving.”

Doctor Mike also listened to Newman’s interview after his recovery from the accident. Newman revealed that he was unconscious and had a bruised brain. In the doctor’s eyes, it was pretty much a concussion or a contrecoup injury. For the uninitiated, a contrecoup injury is a traumatic brain injury situated relative to the point of impact on the head. This occurs on the opposite side of the brain from where the impact occurs.
The good news is that Newman has since made a full recovery and is back racing once again. Since then, he has been competing in the SRX Series on a full-time basis and is enjoying himself. It is currently unclear if he will be back in the Cup Series, but at the moment, things are looking unlikely. One thing is for sure, he is still trying to keep himself active on the racing front.
