Rick Hendrick and Joe Gibbs have enjoyed their time at the top of NASCAR for quite a while now. Both Hendrick Motorsports and Joe Gibbs Racing have been very successful of late and are showing no signs of decelerating. However, there might be a new challenger in the paddock from the 2024 season. The two legendary team owners would do well to keep their eyes out for all the developments happening in Jeff Dickerson’s team.
One of the biggest off-track news coming out of NASCAR during the playoffs this season was of a sale. Kyle Busch sold his Truck Series team, Kyle Busch Motorsports, to Spire Motorsports who have reportedly invested $70 million in total. Rowdy cited his inability to take out the time necessary for his team to function as the reason. He will, however, remain with the team as a consultant and drive the usual five Truck Series races for them.

On a recent episode of the Door Bumper Clear podcast, while discussing Spire’s acquisition of Kyle Busch’s Truck Series team and all of their assets, a veteran NASCAR spotter made a bold statement. Brett Griffin said that he was impressed with Spire and wanted them to challenge the big boys at some point.
“Spire Motorsports are making major moves in this sport right now. And…listen here’s what I really want to see them do, and I don’t know if it can happen because I realize OEM Tier 1 deals are limited, but man! I wanna see the amount of capital they’re putting into the sport, into their race team; I wanna see them land an opportunity to be a Tier 1 team with an OEM because … I mean holy cow you’re talking about $70 million plus that they’re putting into this cause you just can’t buy a charter,” he said.
Griffin raises a valid point. Buying a charter is only the first step. The things that actually follow are what make owning teams in the competition so difficult. Spire Motorsports will have to invest quite a big sum of money into the team Kyle Busch started, and it is not going to be easy.
Of course, Spire is a big name in itself in NASCAR. It has a certain financial stability and infrastructure, but that will not make things easy in any way. “You got infrastructure, you got a shop, you got things so you do save money there but you’re talking a $40 million investment being $55 million. You’re talking a potential $25 million investment in these Trucks being a 35, 40…so you’re talking $100 million plus that Spire Motorsports has going on,” Brett Griffin added.
Kyle Busch made two huge changes in his racing life in 2023. First was leaving Joe Gibbs Racing for Richard Childress Racing after driving 15 years for the former. The second was selling Kyle Busch Motorsports after 14 years as the owner.

He said a bittersweet farewell to his team in Talladega. Kyle Busch said that one of the biggest reasons for him leaving KBM was simply the fact that he could not find as much time as necessary for them. Being a family man and a full-time Cup Series driver does take up most of his time and in the end, KBM is left unattended. The team has done quite well in the Truck Series with Busch in charge. They have won 100 races and two driver’s championships.

“I just feel like I haven’t been able to give as much as my devoted attention as it needs. Not being around as much with Brexton racing and family stuff and me racing and trying to focus on that and being with the Cup team and things,” Busch said during a presser in Talladega.

While it will be hard for Rowdy to sell something he helped create after 14 years, the veteran racer will not be too down. His team will finally get the attention and resources it needs to succeed even further. And their doors will always be open to their ‘rowdy’ founder.
