The 2022 season wasn’t the greatest for the team at the Joe Gibbs Racing headquarter in Huntersville. Several issues plagued the team, ranging from personal to personnel. One of the issues was the loss of their prized asset, Kyle Busch.
For the unversed, they ended up losing one of the biggest parts of the team – a driver that was instrumental to the team’s growth story. Kyle Busch, a driver that had been a part of the team for 15 years. Busch brought them their first Cup Series in 2015, and then their second in 2019.

Busch was not the only loss for the team. Coy Gibbs, the son of Joe Gibbs, passed away in an untimely and unexpected demise on the night prior to the Championship 4 race in Phoenix. It also meant the loss of his father had clouded Ty Gibbs’ first Xfinity Series Championship.
At the end of the season, the team had only faulty memories of the season and nothing else. Commenting on JGR’s season, former crew chief Larry McReynolds said “This is an organization that 3 years ago, 2019, won 19 of the 36 races and put 3 of the 4 drivers in the Championship 4.”
“I know there’s a lot of water under the bridge since 2019, including a brand new race car, but even Joe Gibbs came on with Danielle [Trotta] and I a few weeks ago and he said ‘We are truly, truly missing something right now over here’.”
The team lost out on a seasoned and winning pedigree driver. What could they be missing?…
Kyle Busch is the missing ingredient, say fans
Often, in elite sports, the tactics board overcomplicates matters and misses the wood for the trees. But fans can see through and underline what has been missing.
Responding to Joe Gibbs’ comments on Larry McReynolds’ show, fans showed vigorous support for the beleaguered driver who forcefully had to leave the team for Richard Childress Racing.
One fan said “Allowing your grandson intentionally take out another one of your championship cars with no consequences..and to allow your best driver to walk so you grandson will have a car in the top series…”

Another fan echoed the same sentiment. “And your answer was to let your most successful and most experienced driver walk. 😂😂”
One fan chose to burn JGR with a simple “The main thing you’re missing is loyalty…..” But then one chose to show JGR the plain truth as they said “You will be able to feel what’s missing when Rowdy Wins the Championship next year”
One fan also compared and drew parallels between Busch at JGR and Busch at Hendrick Motorsports. He said, “You are gonna miss Kyle because I believe he’s gonna go on a terror just l8ke (sic) he did when he Hendricks let him go for Dale Jr.”
