The talk about safety has been on everyone’s lips this season in NASCAR. Especially after a few drivers were rendered out of the car and the competition after suffering from concussions due to hard impacts. Recently NASCAR hosted its regular all-drivers meeting. Sometime later, NASCAR driver Corey LaJoie decided to tell everyone about what had been discussed regarding the safety issues being raised by his colleagues.

LaJoie stated, “We could always say, should have done it faster. But this stuff takes time, the lineup tests schedules, and all of this stuff. But it’s not like NASCAR is waiting on their hands, waiting for another guy to get hurt. It’s just been bad luck in a lot of ways, and nobody is more of a risk or a detriment to see that their competitors is hurt than NASCAR is, right?…”
“When we were designing this car, safety was above and beyond and every other checkpoint of this car. And in every day, for the out wire crashes, for the crashes like Cody Ware that are 75 G’s or more, it performs better than the old car.”
“If Code Ware wrecks in the old car, the transmission is sitting on his ankles, you know what I mean? Or if the transmission flips over the cage isn’t gonna crash like Ryan Newman’s car in Daytona or Talladega for that matter. If you get T-boned in the door in this car, you’re not gonna have the guy sit on your lap. So in those outlier crashes you’re gonna be okay.”
Aside from this defensive stance from LaJoie, other drivers such as Denny Hamlin and Chase Elliott also gave their thoughts regarding the meeting. Hamlin found the meeting to be “uneventful” but “informative.” He also seemed to be highly diplomatic with his answers to the media, answering with mostly short sentences. Meanwhile, Elliott stated that he was “not really sure” if his word made any impact on people within the meeting. Previously both drivers had spoken out against NASCAR with regard to safety issues with the new cars.
Fans react to Corey LaJoie’s take on NASCAR working on the safety issues
Fans were not all jolly about what LaJoie stated; some of them agreed with him but a few considered it propaganda peddled by NASCAR since his podcast was produced by NASCAR itself.
Burns are awful, but please don’t minimize concussions. I’m a practitioner forced to retire early due in part to concussion syndrome. Out of 5, 2 were very serious & required hospitalization much like Newman. Now add chemo to the mix, & I can’t remember what my patient asked me.

Ok, cool. So they will get the safety sorted out. That's great. Now, what are they going to do about it racing like shit on everything that isn't a 1.5 tri-oval?
