The Coca-Cola 600 is one of the most grueling contests in the NASCAR Cup Series. The long, 600-mile marathon pushes drivers to their very limits on every front: physical and mental. Notably, Darrell Waltrip has been the only NASCAR driver to have posted five wins in this prestigious race, making him an all-time leader.

Recently, Kevin Harvick spoke about this race in detail in his podcast. In “Kevin Harvick’s Happy Hour,” Harvick necessitates intense preparation as the only means to win this race. He issues caveats to his fellow racers. Based on his experience, Harvick highlights several key problem areas for drivers.

During the podcast, Kevin Harvick added a little color to just how taxing an individual the Coca-Cola 600 can be. “This is a taxing, tough race on everybody on your race team. So, what’s it like? Well, I hope all the boys that were taxed last week, take care of themselves this week because it’s going to be hot,” he started. He went further on to explain its physical and mental implications.

Harvick noted that the Coca-Cola 600 was the first hot summer day. Thus, bringing in a lot of humidity. “That humidity always shows up about this time of year. For the drivers, it’s a long day. They have to be mentally prepared for what they’re getting into and hopefully physically prepared for the higher temperatures,” he said.

It was really the mental challenge of the race, with that extra 100 miles,” said the veteran driver. “When you get to that extra 100 miles from a mental clock in your brain, your brain doesn’t understand why you’re racing. Your body’s like, what in the hell are we doing? Why are we still in here?
