During the Cup race at the Circuit of the Americas, several incidents exemplified the “lack of respect” debate that has been raging on for the past few weeks. This was largely due to the desperate and aggressive driving which resulted in the race becoming a bumping contest. Among those who complained about the quality of driving were Kyle Busch and Denny Hamlin. However, after the Richmond race earlier, NASCAR veteran JJ Yeley called into question Hamlin’s sincerity. As it happened, the Joe Gibbs Racing #11 driver bumped into the #15 Rick Ware Racing driver and spun him out.

Now, Hamlin has raised his hands and owned up to his mistake. The veteran spoke of the incident on his podcast and even publicly apologized. He mentioned on the Actions Detrimental with Denny Hamlin podcast, “This week’s on DH. I f**ked up. Wrecked JJ on accident. My fault JJ, you’ll hear from me.”

What did JJ Yeley say about Denny Hamlin?

Yeley was understandably upset at getting punted out of the way. When he found out that the culprit was Hamlin, he didn’t take it lying down and called him out for being a hypocrite. The NASCAR veteran told Frontstretch, “Oh, I mean it’s pretty simple, I mean he just run me over and got me out of the road. I’m assuming he wanted a caution. I mean there was no sun in his eyes.

“For a guy who’s been preaching respect for the last couple of weeks, it seems really silly.

“In the restart, we’re running too wide, you know, he just got around in a hurry and ran me over. So not much I could do.”

However, it did seem that Hamlin was genuinely apologetic and insisted that there was nothing malicious. The Joe Gibbs Racing driver declared that it was his mistake and that he did not spin Yeley out deliberately. Whether the veteran driver will actually believe Hamlin is a different story altogether.

However, Denny Hamlin has other things to worry about, namely, his upcoming appeal against his penalty.
