NASCAR’s storied history has been punctuated by moments of sheer excitement and jaw-dropping surprises, some so outlandish and wild they’re hard to believe. One such tale recently resurfaced, featuring the legendary former NASCAR driver Tony Stewart.

The scene unfolded on an episode of The Dale Jr. Download, where Dale Earnhardt Jr‘s friend and associate Mike Davis could hardly contain his excitement as he recounted a bizarre story involving a seemingly unhinged Stewart and an unexpected piece of styrofoam.

Dale Earnhardt Jr’s insider goes berserk on wild Tony Stewart story

During the podcast, Junior’s co-host Mike Davis recalled, “I remember specifically because I was there with Spencer in 2003 […] But you ran several races, several divisions. Two of them, I think that night and it was a late model or something else, and then the one that that you did, I think it was in a modified you were leading and somebody wrecked you.”

“And if we’re just going to pick this all the way through, You guys, I don’t know if you remember this. I do. You got put into what I think was a big Styrofoam wall on the front stretch. You got out and you took a big ol’ chunk of that Styrofoam and waited for him to come around. And when he did you wedged that son of a b*tch right into the front.

“Do you remember this? I loved it, the place Dale, it was going bananas man. Everybody was up on the fence. Tony. This was the first race that night he goes into wins the next one in some other division and I’m like wow, Tony on a Cup weekend breaks away and goes to this animal house and that is exactly what it was. It was an animal house.”

“So this animal house and Tony goes in there wins a couple of races. Gets in a fight and goes back to go run the Cup deal the next day. I was like, that’s the man right there,” He concluded.

Stewart is infamous for his past fiery confrontations

Aside from this styrofoam story, Stewart has been notorious for several other on-track fights and antics throughout his illustrious career. His fiery temperament and never-back-down attitude have often led to some heated exchanges with fellow drivers.

One of the most memorable altercations involving the Stewart-Haas Racing co-owner took place in 2012. This was during the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at the Bristol Motor Speedway. Stewart and Matt Kenseth were involved in an on-track incident, which led to both drivers colliding and wrecking their race cars.

However, frustrated by the situation, Stewart climbed out of his car and waited for Kenseth to pass by on the pit road. As Kenseth’s car approached, Stewart hurled his helmet at the front of Kenseth’s vehicle, creating a spectacle that further intensified their rivalry.
