The idea of NASCAR and astrophysics collaborating feels like fiction and one wouldn’t believe it if told the two distinct subjects could come under the same roof. But that is exactly what happened when former race car driver Danica Patrick sat down with famed astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson to discuss the cosmos. Tyson certainly had some strong opinions about the Big Bang Theory! Some could believe that it was God who created light and darkness, but astrophysicists like Neil deGrasse Tyson tactfully disagree.

While there is no concrete evidence that shows this theory in action, many are of the opinion that it did happen. Good news for the space junkies, the host of the famous science-based series, ‘Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey’, appeared as a guest on Danica Patrick‘s podcast and proved the legitimacy of this theory.

What is the Big Bang theory? Surely, everybody knows what the theory says, but just to refresh our memories, around 13.7 billion years ago, everything in this universe was condensed in a singular point of infinite denseness and heat.

Suddenly, an explosive expansion took place, which heralded the formation of what we see through telescopes today. But how accurate is this theory?

While many point a finger at this proposition, Tyson seemed to back it up, saying, “You want evidence? So if you came upon a fireworks display. If you studied the direction and speed of all those bits and pieces of that explosion, even if you weren’t there at the beginning of it, you can say, what happens if I turn the clock back?”

According to the 65-year-old astrophysicist, all those bits and pieces would go back along the path that they had come diverging from. “What I will find is that all the pieces will rejoin themselves at some point of time in the past,” he said, “We did a calculation very similar to this for the entire universe.”

“We look at all the galaxies of the universe, and they’re expanding away from one another. That means they were closer yesterday, last year, ten years ago, a million years ago, a billion years ago,” he added.

Danica Patrick seemed to be convinced by Tyson’s way of proving that the Big Bang had actually happened. However, not everyone would believe Tyson as easily as Patrick did. And that’s where the greatest misery of the scientist lies.

When a scientist comes up with a theory or even a raw proposal, he has to back his hypothesis with a plethora of solid evidence. Because a theory without evidence is as good as a fairy tale.

Danica Patrick seemed to sympathize with this and opined, “Everything you guys find goes through such a rigorous analyzation by all your fellow scientists to try and challenge it.”

No wonder Tyson agreed. “What you just said there, is so under-recognized and unappreciated by the public,” he admitted. He then went on to explain that even in order to record a sighting in the telescope, there’s a telescope allocation committee that warrants one’s findings. According to Tyson, this committee is like a peer review of a proposal.

“I have a cool idea, I’m not just convincing anybody of it,” continued Tyson, “In every large telescope, the director has what’s called director’s discretionary time. Which bypasses the telescope allocation committee. So the director can say, this is really high risk and no one thinks it will work but I think we should give it a shot.”
