One could say that the former NASCAR driver Danica Patrick has been getting the most hatred in the community recently. Days after passing insensitive words toward Martin Truex Jr.’s former partner, Sherry Pollex, Danica’s been corrected and called out many times. Sherry’s unfortunate passing away last week has saddened the fandom deeply and has been the prime reason for the unending criticism that is being thrown at the 41-year-old 2008 Indy Japan 300 winner.

The discontent amongst the fans over Danica Patrick has gone to such an extent that uncharacteristic phenomena have begun to occur. Owing to a common agenda against the female driver, fans have sided with a certain NASCAR insider who usually receives a lot of flak for his opinions.

Sherry Pollex was a philanthropist in the truest sense, and her actions underlined her kindness towards humanity. In a death that has hurt the community deeply, Sherry succumbed to stage 3 cancer last Sunday. Martin Truex Jr. mourned the death of his former partner through a story on Instagram, which resonated with the grief he and concerned people had to feel. However, among all, it was Danica Patrick, whose way of mourning Sherry’s death kicked off a chain reaction of events that ended up with her being at the center of it.

In response to Truex’s last words for his ex-girlfriend on social media, Danica posted, “I avoid negativity on social media at almost all costs. Almost…. But this is the most insensitive, disconnected statement from a guy that I have never liked. And obviously, for good reason. I don’t care what happened between them, but this is as cold as it gets. A PR rep wrote this guarantee. You’re free from this now, Sherry.”

These comments from Danica have invited opinions from all across the community. One of the critics also happened to be former Kaulig Racing spotter Brett Griffin. Griffin had apparently called her an idiot” on his podcast, Door Bumper Clear. While the fans generally align themselves with an opinion that negates Griffin’s with a change of heart, this time around they have chosen to stand beside him.

Had Danica Patrick been more aware of the effects her comments were going to have she would have never spoken them out loud. While fans have mostly been against her due to her poor record in racing in NASCAR, many of them jumped on the wagon that threw shade at her for humanitarian reasons. Fans on Reddit collectively voiced their displeasure at Danica while also showing emotion of surprise over being in affirmation with Griffin.

“When Brett is correct for calling you out, you really, really f**ed up.” commented a fan on Reddit, indicating that Griffin has a tendency for unnecessary criticism which is not the case this time around.

Quite visibly the fans have been seething in anger over the poor choice of words from Danica. Another Redditor showed support for Griffin’s statement, albeit in a sarcastic manner, as he commented, “When an idiot calls you an idiot, you gotta be a real idiot.”

It is still unsure as to how long this problem goes on. But in one way or the other, the NASCAR community has found a common ground to agree on, which is one of the positives of this situation.
