Sporting a simple white t-shirt, blue jeans, sneakers, and a cap, Dale Earnhardt Jr could easily pass off as a student at Piper High School. You could see it in the photo above, where he and his dad seem to be having a serious discussion. And even after that, it seems he feels that today’s kids appear much younger than their actual age.
In a recent podcast with Mike Davis, the son of the 7-time NASCAR Cup champion delved into the looks of high school teenagers in the 50s, during his time, and in the present day. Even though he himself looked younger than his years, he made some intriguing observations that are hard to ignore.

In a captivating conversation between Mike and Dale Jr, the NASCAR legend couldn’t help but ponder the stark contrast between how people looked in the 1950s and 1990s compared to the present year of 2023, especially when they reached their senior years or college.
Recalling his recent encounter with his yearbook and comparing it to a relative’s who just entered senior high school, Dale Jr was astounded by the major generation gap. He exclaimed, “Back in the 50s and 60s, man! These people looked like 35-year-old adults. And when I was in school when I was a student, I thought we looked like seniors should look. And now when I look at seniors, for example, seniors of 2023, they look like 8th graders.”
Mike Davis had a brilliant retort that Dale Earnhardt Jr couldn’t help but nod to.
He quipped, “Guess what has changed? You changed! You got older!“ He went on to explain how, as we age, everyone else seems to appear younger than they really are. Davis elaborated that as we age, we tend to perceive others as looking younger than they truly are. He even offered a brilliant analogy, pointing out that an old racing picture from 2003 now looks classic, as it’s already two decades old. Time flies indeed!

Excitingly enough, this is not the first time these two legendary stars have bantered about getting older. In one of their podcasts back in June 2023, they discussed the effects of aging. Mike Davis recounted how he felt sore after kneeboarding, which he considered a typical sign of getting older.
He reflected on never experiencing such sensations before and couldn’t help but think about his age. To lighten the mood, Dale Jr. swiftly retorted, “That’s because that is probably the only physical activity you’ve done in the last two **** months, and that’s why you are sore,” to everyone’s amusement.
