In a stunning race at the NASCAR Cup Series Street race in Chicago, Shane Van Gisbergen emerged victorious, capturing the attention of racing enthusiasts worldwide. What makes this achievement even more remarkable is the role played by his Crew Chief, Darian Grubb, who once faced the disappointment of being fired by none other than Tony Stewart himself back in 2011.
Despite the setback, Grubb and Tony Stewart managed to capture the Cup Series title that year. Now fate brought Grubb and Van Gisbergen together, providing an opportunity for redemption.

Darian Grubb helped SVG with his NASCAR debut. The race began with a delay due to heavy rain over the weekend, resulting in NASCAR shortening the Grant Park 220 to 75 laps. While other teams dwindled to rethink their strategies, Darian Grubb had it all figured out. On the NASCAR Live podcast, Darian Grubb was recently asked by the host, “When your team and your driver had to restart back in 18th position with around 20 or 25 laps to go, what were you thinking about at that point?“.
Darian Grubb shared his thoughts on the situation, stating, “We knew it was going to be close, and we’d already been watching the time for the sunset.” The team understood that the West side buildings would cause darkness to fall earlier than the posted sunset time, making it impossible to complete the full 100 laps.
With the understanding that the race distance would be curtailed, Van Gisbergen’s team weighed their options. Some competitors took the risk of jumping the previous caution to gain an advantage, but given their position in the top five, Van Gisbergen’s team decided against it.
When NASCAR officially announced the adjusted distance, the team knew they had to make their move. Darian stated, “Of course, some of the guys were able to jump the previo us caution and take the risk and the game because they didn’t have the track position at that point. We were in the top five, and we didn’t want to risk it until we knew.”
Although disappointed to find themselves in 18th place, Van Gisbergen quickly demonstrated his potential by advancing to 16th on the first lap. The team observed the lap times improving on the dashboard and witnessed Van Gisbergen’s exceptional skills as he continuously overtook one or two cars per lap. The excitement of the race shifted from the team’s own work to the awe-inspiring performance of Van Gisbergen.
Grubb expressed his admiration, stating, “Watching Shane pick off one or two cars almost every lap after that was more just sitting and watching the show.” The team had completed their part, and now they relished the opportunity to witness Van Gisbergen’s incredible driving skills.
