As Jimmie Johnson stepped out to the track moments before his final start as a full-time NASCAR driver, another NASCAR great, Dale Earnhardt Jr., caught up with him. Johnson spoke about his future and whether NASCAR is in it. His statements will certainly bring a smile to many faces.

Johnson said he is open to staying in the sport, in whichever way the opportunity presents itself in the future.

I’m really open to it. I wanna step away from full-time racing to just have more time to embrace life and live life and be more present.

“I know I still need to compete. That’s who I am and how I’m wired. That’s what led to the 13 races I’ll have in the IndyCar Series,” Johnson said of the same.

Jimmie Johnson speaks about NASCAR comeback plans

Johnson will keep his options open and may even run a race here or there in the Cup Series. He would be open to a spot in Earnhardt Jr’s Xfinity Series team as well, as he suggested with a smile.

Certainly would love to come back if the right opportunity came along in Cup. Or even Xfinity, I know you have an Xfinity team.

“If the right situation comes along, I’m open to it and I certainly look forward to being back in the garage area,” Johnson expressed.

The 45-year-old said that he is looking forward to celebrating the momentous occasion with his family after the race. The tough time was last year when he finally took the decision to call it quits.

This time last year was probably the toughest for me. I knew in my head what my decision was. It was time to sit down with Mr. Hendrick and say it out loud for the first few times,” Johnson said further.

Despite the difficulties of the 2020 season, where Johnson was not able to have the most ideal farewell, Johnson is happy with where he is. He can proudly look back at his 19-year-long illustrious career.

I’ve had a very interesting year as we all have in 2020. But I really have a full heart. I’m really thankful for the journey and the accomplishments I’ve had during these 19 years and looking forward to a big celebration for that,” Johnson said.

He also admitted that he never imagined he would end up with 83 wins after his first Cup race win. He did not even imagine he would win a title. Johnson did win a title then and did so on six more occasions. The NASCAR legend, for the time being, shifts his focus to the IndyCar Series.
