Mother nature plays a big role in how a race is run, or if at all a race is run. There have been several times this season that fans and drivers have had to wait an extra day for the racing action to get underway, all due to rain. For the upcoming race weekend, there won’t be any rain, but there will be something far more eye-catching.

Being a troublesome intruder in NASCAR this season, July was one of the most difficult for anyone at the track. Races were disrupted or delayed multiple times over the course of the month, including the New Hampshire and Chicago street races. Later, the Michigan race was also disrupted due to rain and delayed. However, rain is not in the forecast for the South Point 400 race this coming weekend. What is going to happen is something a lot of people don’t get to see in their lifetimes.

According to reports, the occurrence will not take place for another 25 years, and the race track may be the perfect place to watch it. This coming Saturday, the people in Las Vegas will be treated to a rare partial solar eclipse. It will take place during the Saturday morning practice and qualifying sessions. Drivers may just pop out of their cars for a while and look up to see the effect of the moon blocking out the sun.

Fans are advised to carry protective goggles, as it is not safe to look directly into a solar eclipse with the naked eye. Their attention will be away from the on-track action for a little while. It is, after all, a solar eclipse, which is quite rare. The annular solar eclipse will be visible in states in the southern part of the US, Mexico, and several countries in South America. Eminent NASCAR journalist Bob Pockrass broke the news for NASCAR fans in a recent tweet. Fans were quick to share their opinions on the rare celestial event taking place on a race weekend.

One fan suggested that NASCAR should have scheduled the race in such a way and it happened during the eclipse. Only the Saturday morning practice and qualifying will take place during the event and not the race.

“Should have scheduled a race during the solar eclipse, that could have been interesting and a marketing goldmine,” the fan commented.

“Canceled due to sun,” said another user, poking fun at the race organizers.

One fan believes that the racing action will be put on hold for a short while as the sun is blocked out overhead.’

“I’m guessing maybe a short hold as it starts so nobody gets a fast time in the shade?” they said.

For some others, the eclipse is a non-factor. Something that will not affect the racing at all and will just be an event to look at while at the track.

“The word here is a partial solar eclipse. So it will not get dark in relation to night. But will be much like early evening in low daylight,” one fan commented.

“Partial eclipse won’t be any issue. Turn the lights on and it will be fine. It’s a non story imo,” penned another.

At the end of the day, a solar eclipse is not a reason why a race weekend will get disrupted. But it will be a fun viewing experience for fans and drivers. Just remember to have protective eyewear on when you’re looking up.
